The Armed

The Armed is a six-piece band from Detroit, Michigan playing a blend of hardcore punk and extreme metal since 2009. Three of its members -- Chris Elkjar, Tony Wolski, and Aaron Jones -- were previously in another Detroit-based hardcore punk band, Slicer Dicer. The Armed play several Slicer Dicer songs in live shows and included two, Terrordactyl and Buy A Snake, on their first full-length album, These Are Lights.

Their full-length may be downloaded free at the official website, www. Read more on

If You Buy One Thing This Week: pre-order the new album from The Armed

April 23rd, 2015

We have waited six, long, hard years for a new full length album from The Armed. They are, in our humble opinion, one of the best damn messed-up math/punk/stupid genre-tag-du-jour-core bands in the world today. Sure, they’ve released a nearly-yearly update with their EPs, but as much as we love Common Enemies, Young & Beautiful, Spreading Joy, and their split with Tharsis They, we were always left desperate for more. For over half a damn decade, we’ve been desperate for more.

This week the band announced that long wait was finally over by confirming that the follow-up to 2009’s These Are Lights is coming out on 23 June 2015.

PREMIERE! The video to Warpaint Is Not A Mask by Nice Hooves puts so many crap videos to shame

August 6th, 2014

Nice Hooves 2014 Thrash Hits

Do you know why we hardly ever do “video premieres” or “exclusive first play!!!11!” features very often on Thrash Hits? It’s because they’re rubbish. “Exclusive”, you say? For all of five minutes until someone reposts it elsewhere. They’re nothing more than pissing contests and territorial chest-beating from both the bands and media that both demand and capitulate to them.

That’s why we only do them for stuff we really, really like. That’s why we’re doing it for ‘Warpaint Is Not A Mask’, the brand new and incredible video from Detroit’s Nice Hooves.

And what’s more, both splits are absolutely, 100%, free to download in a whole host of formats, including lossless for all you audiophile types.

Label Profile 007: No Rest Until Ruin

No Rest Until Ruin Thrash Hits

If you’ve read Thrash Hits for any length of time, you’ll know we bloody love The Armed: the loudest, nastiest, most badass band out of Detroit that your poser mates down the pub have never heard of, who’ve released everything they’ve ever recorded as totally free downloads. Well, they’ve only gone and formed themselves a super DIY label, haven’t they? No Rest Until Ruin is now the home of The Armed, Old Gods, and Nice Hooves – and you’d be wise to get familiar with those bands if you’re not already. We dropped an email to Tony Wolski, one of the men behind the label, to find out what’s been stirring in Michigan these last few months…  [Read more →]

WIN! A copy of The Armed’s incredible Spreading Joy EP on sexy 7″ vinyl

February 12th, 2013

The Armed 2012 promo photo Thrash Hits

We like The Armed. We like them a lot. We like how they give away free, lossless digital versions of all their music just because they want to. We love that they do this so their music can be unrestrained by anything even slightly approaching commercial concerns. We love that they sound like the angriest bits of The Dillinger Escape Plan roaring bitter fury at a tornado. We like The Armed so much that we bought extra copies of the sexy 7-inch vinyl version of their latest EP, Spreading Joy, for the express purpose of giving them away to YOU.

It’s more intense, more ferocious, and just plain better than whatever the Hell you’re listening to right now. We guaran-damn-tee it.

Bands think we’re Best of the Blogs. No biggie.

September 14th, 2012

Thrash Hits on

We know we’re damn good at what we do. We’ve got nominated for awards and stuff, so we’re not totally out of our gourd to have that opinion. You probably think we’re at least pretty good at what we do too, otherwise you wouldn’t be here reading this. And the folks over at think we’re pretty damn good at what we do too – that’s why they asked us to be the latest entry in their Best of the Blogs feature over in their Originals section and to inform the masses of users about three bands we’ve been listening to recently – Black Moth, History Of The Hawk (Did we mention that we were hosting History Of The Hawk’s album release show in November, where they’ll be supported by Throne, Empress, and Cult Cinema? And that tickets are a mere £4 in advance? Do your duty, dear readers), and The Armed.

Anyway, go check out our blog for here, and while you’re at it, you should go and join the Thrash Hits group on to see how you compare to some of our other miscreant readers.

Help The Armed to keep recording and therefore continue to be awesome

The Armed 2 2011 promo photo Thrash Hits

If you’ve been reading Thrash Hits for any length of time now, you’ll know we’ve got a lot of time for The Armed. In case you’re new to these parts, The Armed are DIY-as-fuck, Detroit-based, DEP-associated badasses, who put out all of their releases for free download. Well, DIY is all good, and giving away ALL your music for free is even better, but it doesn’t exactly pay the bills when it comes to recording new material. Which is why The Armed need your help.

Top 10s of 2011: Hugh Platt

December 9th, 2011

Hugh 2011 End Of Year

When we wrote the intro to our Deputy Editor’s Top 10 Records last year, we joked that he’s a surly so-and-so who doesn’t like anything and enjoys nothing. This isn’t true. This year, for example, he took a worrying amount of pleasure from the torrent of abuse levelled at him by fans of Five Finger Death Punch. He also liked far, far more records than our strict album-of-the-year voting rules would allow, but after much deliberation he narrowed them down to this – his Top 10 Records of 2011.
