Have wallies stopped calling The Black Dahlia Murder a “metalcore” band yet? As cases of mistaken genre identity go, this is one of the sillier ones. How many slabs of scathingly-vicious, speaker-ruiningly heavy death metal do you need to release before people look past the odd stretched earlobe and short haircut and just accept what a band actually sounds like? Album number six in what’s becoming an accelerating run of form might not change any more slightly-slow minds than 2011’s Ritual managed to, but by this point it doesn’t really matter what you call them – The Black Dahlia Murder and their brand of savage yet accessible melodic death metal aren’t going away any time soon.

Thrash Hits TV: The Black Dahlia Murder vs The Fans

March 19th, 2012

Trevor Strnad The Black Dahlia Murder promo photo Thrash Hits

Sometimes when you go to film a video interview, everything goes wrong. With the case of our interview with Trevor Strnad of The Black Dahlia Murder, everything did. Our camera broke, and refused to film in anything other than black and white. Our microphone broke, forcing us to wing it with an external digital recorder.

Oh, and we foolishly agreed to only put questions to Trevor that were suggested by our Facebook and Twitter followers. We really ought to know better than that by now.

It seems that we can’t get enough of The Black Dahlia Murder and Skeletonwitch’s UK tour. Not only did about half our writing staff pile into the Camden Underworld when the tour hit London, but our photographer in chief, Gary Wolstenholme, was on hand to snap it when the tour arrived in his native Sheffield. His sexy, sexy pictures are just after the jump.

January is hands down the grimmest month of the promoter’s year. It’s cold and everyone’s skint, hungover and depressed about the bleak reality of returning to work and beginning another mundane year of Yes sir, No sir, Three bags full sir. Which means if you’re going to put on a night, you better be damn sure you book good enough bands to draw out the crowds. We did it last year with the debut Thrash Hits Presents… gig at the Old Blue Last (which sold out) so believe us when we say we know it ain’t easy. Tonight’s billing is strong enough to fill The Underworld for two consecutive nights, something quite rare for this time of year.

Six things we found out when we went to see The Black Dahlia Murder at The Underworld:

Trevor Strnad and The Black Dahlia Murder had a pretty splendid 2011. Their fifth studio album, Ritual, was a hit with fans and critics alike, and after talking with Trevor the other day, it seems as though his band is well-prepared for the impending 2012 apocalypse when the lizards are going to take over.

It’s that time for again where we needlessly expand on a self-explanatory headline – Bloodstock Open Air have announced three more bands for 2012. The Black Dahlia Murder, Grand Magus, and the relatively-recently-reformed Sanctuary will be descending upon Catton Hall next year.

Is there anything better than a Thrash Hits Festival Splash Page? Yeah, loads of things but you won’t find the best online festival coverage on any of them. You’ll find that right here.

All our work from Sonisphere Festival 2011 is going be linked to from this page (eventually), so give it a bookmark or just don’t close it, because it’s all you’re going to need. Individual band coverage (interviews, photos, setlists and some tiny reviews), rumours, drinking games, stage times, dodgy photos of as many sexy ladies in various states of safe-for-work undress as we can legitimately get away with? It’s all here.
