Since Devin Townsend returned to music four years ago, we’ve seen nearly all sides of his diverse output reimagined and revitalised under his “Devin Townsend Project” moniker. All except one that is – Ziltoid The Omniscient, titular star of Townsend’s 2007 record and the musician’s malevolent alien alter-ego. Seven years on, we finally have Z2 – the spiritual follow-up to ZTO’s screed on creativity and caffeine addiction – but with a difference this time.

Retrospective Review: The Devin Townsend Project – Ghost

December 20th, 2011

When we asked our contributors to tell us their albums of the year, we also offered them the opportunity to retrospectively review any of their Top 10 list that we hadn’t reviewed already. Ruth Booth took us up on that offer.

With those weightless woodwind notes, we come to the final (planned) part of the four-year, self-titled epic: Ghost, the ambient calm to Deconstruction’s storm of chaotic metal. Though Deconstruction is the more abrasive and complex of the two, Ghost has potential to be the ‘difficult’ record here – and not just if you’re still pining for Strapping Young Lad. Townsend has attempted ambient and folk sounds before, though they’ve largely been complimentary or quirky flavours on more eclectic albums. Meanwhile, his only fully ambient records, The Hummer and Devlab, were self-conscious, rather willful experiments in THC sound, and remain cult choices even amongst devoted Dev fans.

Retrospective Review: The Devin Townsend Project – Deconstruction

If Addicted wasn’t heavy enough, then bloody hell, you can’t say you haven’t got what you’ve asked or here. Depth of sound has always been a trademark of Townsend’s work, but even by those standards, Deconstruction is a tremendously dense record, one that’s way too heavy to be just metal; stuffed with (deep breath) opera, death metal, lullabies, space olympics raves, Al Jolson on ice; Meshuggah, Melechesh and Stephen Sondheim; metal luminaries in double figures, the Prague Philharmonic and PA’DAM choir; sex, death, religion, evolution, giant fast food, aliens… I’m not sure about the kitchen sink, but I’m pretty sure I heard a cat on there at one point.

Devin Townsend unleashed a double-header of mind-crushing complexity and zen tranquility when his self-titled Project released Deconstruction and Ghost albums in June. Bloodstock Open Air 2011: The Devin Townsend Project @ Ronnie James Dio Stage – Friday, 12 August 2011

Devin Townsend at Bloodstock 2011 by Gary Wolstenholme Thrash Hits

When you think about “standard” Bloodstock Open Air stage costumes, you think of viking weapons, corpse paint, fake blood, and grizzled beards. Devin Townsend strutted out in a suit that wouldn’t have looked out of place on Miami Vice, and he still rocked harder than 99% of bands that have ever graced the main stage here at Bloodstock.

Gojira team up with Devin Townsend and Meshuggah’s Fredrik Thordendal to melt faces with ‘Of Blood And Salt’

May 27th, 2011

Just re-read that headline again. Pretty bloody exciting, isn’t it? Earlier today, this brand spanking-new track from Gojira, which features the vocal talents of Townsend and the guitar skills of Meshuggah’s Frederik Thordendal leaked onto YouTube, and it’s pretty much met and exceeded all of our expectations for Gojira’s forthcoming Sea Shepherd EP.
