Introducing…. Soccer With Rockers 2014: a Fantasy Football nightmare

August 19th, 2014

That’s the Thrash Hits FC team photo taken on Sunday afternoon at the annual BSM 5-a-side football tournament. The important thing is that despite not winning, we definitely didn’t come last.

Anyway, the point is that the Raz-shaped half of the Thrash Hits editorial team loves football. It’s the glue that holds much of British society together, after all and the ubiquitous love often manifests itself on the internet in the form of Fantasy Football. So we made a league. It’s called Serie ARGH.

Thrash Hits TV: Thy Art Is Murder vs #LinkinNARC

July 12th, 2014

Thy Art Is Murder Download Festival 2014 by Ben Gibson Thrash Hits

When we went to Download Festival 2014, we had planned on asking all the bands what they would do if Linkin Park ratted them out to the cops (not sure what we’re talking about? Here’s a link to Sublime With Rome’s version of what happened when they played a festival with Chester Bennington and co at a festival in the USA). However, we got distracted by drinking booze and watching bands and only did a handful. The best of our videos – by far – was when we caught up with our old friends CJ McMahon and Lee Stanton from mighty Australian deathcore monsters Thy Art Is Murder what they would do if Linkin Park grassed them up to the fuzz.

Sunday Slaylist: Australia Day

January 26th, 2014

ThyArtIsMurderbyBenGibsonThrashHits

Today (January 26) is Australia Day. According to Wikipedia, it “marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Sydney Cove, New South Wales, and raising of the Flag of Great Britain at that site by Governor Arthur Phillip”. In the UK, this means loads of pubs put on extra drink offers on crappy lager in order to entice the nearby Australian ex-pat community into the pub. At Thrash Hits, it represents something we can hang a themed Sunday Spotify Slaylist off.

Classic question: IKEA… or death? (It’s a game)

October 10th, 2013

ikea or death game thrash hits 2013

It’s usually when being dragged around the Swedish homeware caverns by our inevitably better halves for hours on end. Ignoring the meticulously laid out showrooms, we’ve instead preferred to dream of cheap meatballs, cheap hotdogs and the possibility of wheeling a lot of awesome stuff that we can build towards our shit cars – anything to get out – and, at some point, we’ve all asked ourselves the question: “IKEA or Death?” The thing is, we’ve never asked it in this context.

Some fine individuals from marketing company, Gatesman + Dave have made a fun game called IKEA OR DEATH where you have to guess whether a name is an item from IKEA or whether it’s a metal band. It’s fun. It’s a game. It’s a play on words. Let’s not get too emotional about a lot of the bands being black metal bands.

Punk is a state of mind, not a leather jacket

September 24th, 2013

The usual outrage has flared up amongst the alternative scene today as more punk stylings have found their way into the mainstream. It’s not even a specific person doing it, but a shop. An evil capitalist shop. Raziq Rauf thinks the punks should actually pipe down. It’s just a jacket, after all…

There’s been vague uproar in punk circles today and, as ever, their ire is directed at The Man. Firstly, Urban Outfitters have the temerity to sell a punk-oriented leather jacket. Sure. Secondly, and conversely, the last bastion of quality journalism, Buzzfeed have published a riveting list of pictures explaining why “punk is dead”. Sure.

Thrash Hits TV: Thy Art Is Murder vs joggers

July 17th, 2013

CJ McMahon of Thy Art Is Murder by Ben Gibson Thrash Hits

British people have a reputation for being polite, so why did some jogger guy behind the Highbury Garage decide to try to ruin our interview with CJ McMahon of Thy Art Is Murder? We were just minding our own business, filming an interview with the bearded Australian deathcore frontman, and this guy goes out of his way to run between us and the camera. What a bell-end.

Live & Photos: Thy Art Is Murder @ London Highbury Garage – 02 July 2013

Thy Art Is Murder by Ben Gibson Thrash Hits

Is deathcore still a dirty word? Thy Art Is Murder might prefer to call themselves “modern extreme metal”, but whatever label you want to try to pigeonhole them in, seeing them sellout Upstairs at the Garage was a sweaty and violent way to spend a Tuesday night. Hugh Platt went down to handle the words; Ben Gibson risked life, limb, and camera equipment to go down the front and take photos.

6 things we learned watching Thy Art Is Murder in London…

Sunday Slaylist: Ghostfest 2013

June 30th, 2013

Ghostfest 2013 promo photo Thrash Hits

We’re not at Ghostfest 2013. It started yesterday. It’s happening even more today. We were going to go and write a massive sarcastic article about the m0shbros and m0shwags and all that, but then then car we were going to hustle up there failed its MOT and the floor we were going to crash on got flooded by a broken washing machine, and we’re too cheap to buy a train ticket and book a hotel room.

It’s not going to stop us enjoying the line-up this weekend though, even if it’s just through our Sunday Spotify Slaylist.
