Trap Them is a grindcore / crust band based in Louisville & Seattle, United States, formed in 2001.

Trap Them's influences include hardcore punk bands, such as Black Flag, Born Against, and Tragedy; metal bands like Dismember and Entombed (whose "buzzsaw" guitar tone create the main guitar sound for Trap Them), and experimental bands like Swans. Ryan McKenney's lyrics tend to deal with issues both personal and political, while recent material has also contained a conceptual element to its lyricism. Read more on Last.fm

Avenged Sevenfold topping the UK album charts is good for Metal

September 1st, 2013

It’s not the first time that a metal band has reached #1 in the UK Albums Chart, but it feels like a rarer and rare occasion, so Raz talks about why we should all celebrate Avenged Sevenfold doing so with Hail To The King.

Avenged Sevenfold have reached #1 in the UK Album Charts with Hail To The King and that’s a great thing for Heavy Metal because, like it or not, it is a subculture. Sure, it’s a subculture that sells out Wembley Stadium and fills Donington Park every year, but metal is a niche genre nonetheless.

It requires effort to keep up with and only the very dedicated (me and you) ever know what’s going on in the metal world on a daily basis. That’s why Avenged Sevenfold appearing in such a high-profile position in non-metal media is important. It reminds “them” that “we” are still here.

2011 end of year raz albums of the year raziq rauf thrash hits

I’ve spent 2011 harping on about one band: Trap Them. It’s unlikely you could have had a conversation with me about music without me saying “Darker” and “Handcraft” at some point. I may have just spoilt the incredible fun of reading my list. Anyway… the other nine albums on this list are wicked as well. Buy them all.

Top 10s of 2011: Hugh Platt

Hugh 2011 End Of Year

When we wrote the intro to our Deputy Editor’s Top 10 Records last year, we joked that he’s a surly so-and-so who doesn’t like anything and enjoys nothing. This isn’t true. This year, for example, he took a worrying amount of pleasure from the torrent of abuse levelled at him by fans of Five Finger Death Punch. He also liked far, far more records than our strict album-of-the-year voting rules would allow, but after much deliberation he narrowed them down to this – his Top 10 Records of 2011.

Even MORE free music – this time it’s a 20-track mixtape from Southern Lord

The Power Of The Riff Southern Lord Thrash Hits

This is last free download thing we’ll post today – we promise. Southern Lord have put together a killer 20-track mixtape to mark The Power Of The Riff, the tour/festival-thing they’ve got set to tear up the West Coast of the USA later this month. Why should this be of interest of anyone here in Blighty? Well, because said mixtape features acts like All Pigs Must Die, Black Breath, Early Graves, and Trap Them, that’s why.

That and the fact that they’re giving it away for free.

Live: Rotten Sound, Trap Them + Gaza @ London Camden Underworld – 12 April 2011

April 15th, 2011

It’s the hottest grindcore package tour of Spring 2011 so after gobbling some free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, we all traipsed down to the grotty Camden underworld that is… The Underworld. Rotten Sound, Trap Them and Gaza were the ones we really wanted to see so we’ve totally ignored Haust and The Kandidate. Sorry, lads. The other three were bloody good though!

February 28th, 2011

Trap Them are about to release one of the best extreme albums of 2011 and they’re going on tour with Finnish grindcore enthusiasts, Rotten Sound to celebrate. We had a chat with TT vocalist, Ryan McKenney about all that.

What is the one thing that you took away with you from your last tour with Rotten Sound and how will that help you this time round?
“More than anything, we were able to have the opportunity to share a tour with one of the best grind bands in history. To go on that tour right after Cycles had come out was incredible. Watching them tear every crowd a new asshole night after night for an hour was quite mind blowing. I have nothing but amazing words to describe Rotten Sound as a band and as individuals. I’m just excited to go back over to Europe and watch them for another twenty-something days in a row.”

It’s an explosion. It’s a big crunching mess. It’s a hasty cacophony. For your ears, it could a goddamned catastrophe. These might be some of the things that fly through your mind while you attempt to make sense of the blistering onslaught of hardcore/metal crossover that greets you during ‘Damage Prose’ – the opening track to Trap Them’s third album Darker Handcraft.

They are all reasonable thoughts because, thankfully, this record does not get any easier to listen to.
