Valient Himself’s Rocknowledgy returned this week with its 43rd episode – if you’re not on board with the superb (and Thrash Hits-sponsored) music podcast from the Valient Thorr frontman, then this Sunday is as good as ever to dive right in.
Valient Thorr is a band whose Venusian spacecraft landed in Greenville, North Carolina, USA, forming in 2001. Soon after they relocated to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA so they could fix their spaceship quicker.
On July 1, 2003 Valient Thorr self-released their first album (only pressing 1000 copies which were sold at shows), Stranded on Earth, which had the same musical setup as present, but one of their guitarists (Djinn Thorr) used a keyboard, which helped to bring dance elements into their music. About 18 months ago we posted about Valient Himself’s Rocknowledgy – the quite frankly brilliant music podcast from the Valient Thorr frontman. Rocknowledgy is a (now) monthly show where Valient Himself takes a John Peel-esque approach to music, playing music from across the spectrum – you’re as likely to hear old soul jams on an episode as you are hardcore punk. We bloody love it – and that’s why we’re sponsoring Rocknowledgy for the next 12 months.

Valient Himself is a man of many talents. Obviously, as the frontman of Valient Thorr, he’s a kick-ass musician. If you’re a subscriber to his awesome Rocknowledgy podcast (which we’ve told you about before), then you’ll be aware the man used to (and indeed, still is!) a damn good radio DJ. And it also turns out that’s he’s a dab hand when it comes of wielding a pen and paintbrush.

With all the brouhaha regarding summer outdoor festivals, we somewhat neglected a springtime indoor one that’s taking place on our very doorstep – DesertFest. Today is the third and final day of the first London incarnation of the festival, where more than 50 stoner, doom, spacerock and sludge bands have been giving the foundations of Camden Town a solid shake-up. If – like us – you had to miss this year’s festival, you can at least console yourself with the Spotify Slaylist we’ve made in the festival’s honour.

Festival season has officially begun – but that’s not the only business going on this month. Once gain, Thrash Hits is casting our eyes over the next four weeks to highlight what you should be paying attention to.
Apparently there’s some festival or another called ‘Download’ or something happening this month. Who knew?

California-based psychedelic rockers Valient Thorr are landing in the UK as support to Mastodon at their tiny club shows. Valient Himself answered these questions with an elegance clearly unattributable to real Earthlings.
How’s it working out for you guys on Planet Earth right now?
“Finally, rays of light are popping through the glooming, murky cloud that has been hanging in our atmosphere for eight years or so. I feel as though personally we are still fighting for time with loved ones – that’s how it goes – but as a band, things couldn’t be better. Well I guess they could actually, but we are on an ever-changing plane, looking upward.”
