Formed in 2007 with the intention of honouring England’s rich culture and heritage, Winterfylleth set a solidified mission statement to bring awareness to England’s historical stories, folklore, landscapes and ancestral past through their impassioned black metal.

Winterfylleth (which translates into Winter Full Moon from the Old English language) represents the first full moon in October as well as the Anglo-Saxon festival of the arrival of winter. Read more on Last.fm

The Ukraine’s black metal underground is so underground that one of its leading bands, Drudkh, has a “no photos, no interviews, no website, no gigs” policy, and then streams their latest EP on Bandcamp. Awesome right? But it goes deeper – this EP isn’t just Drudkh covering lesser-known bands from the Ukranian scene (Hefeystos, Unclean, Sacrilegium) but also inviting the very English folk/black metallers Winterfylleth to contribute a cover of Hateforest’s ‘The Gates’ to conclude this four song split EP.

The Thrash Hits Podcast 020: It’s a question of Britishness

February 15th, 2013

Thrash Hits Podcast 1

This week Hugh and Tom Dare sit down to tackle the subject of Britishness in metal, taking care to avoid going on about tedious, tub-thumping, nationalist nonsense, and instead concentrating on some of the more unusual quirks and trends that Britishness has inadvertantly lent to British rock and metal over the years – how it affects not just how bands sound, but how we think about bands, and even how we come to cover certain bands at all in the first place.

GREATEST HITS OF 2012 no.9: Tom Dare goes on and on and ON about the 20 year evolution of Black Metal

We’ve got a fairly loose system when it comes to organising submissions from our contributors. They email us an idea, we tell them if it’s good or rubbish, then they go off and write it. Nice and simple. So when Tom Dare emailed us with a pitch for a retrospective on how Black Metal has evolved in the twenty years since the release of Darkthrone’s A Blaze In The Northern Sky, we just let him get on with it.

Damnation Festival 2012 Thrash Hits

Earlier this week, Damnation Festival announced Hawk Eyes, Ravens Creed and The Atrocity Exhibit as the final three bands for their 2012 line-up, and my, what a killer line-up it is too. Headed up by Dorset doom overlords, Electric Wizard, this year’s Damnation Festival also sees Pig Destroyer make their first return to the UK in eight years – why the hell haven’t you bought a ticket already? If you have bought a ticket already: well done. You know the score.

If ever British Black Metal had them, Winterfylleth are the genre’s controversy-laced poster boys. The Mercian Sphere gave the scene a sound so rooted in heart and soul in Albion, it almost transcended genre. Such is the anticipation for follow-up The Threnody of Triumph – but if you’re expecting more heart-warming hearkening to the days of post-Arthurian legend, it might be time to pack up your harp and wend heme.
