A Day To Remember 2014 by Mike Burnell Thrash Hits

Last week it was Asking Alexandria, this week it’s A Day To Remember – this autumn really is packed to the guts with bands consolidating their status at the top of the Kerrangcore tree with some of the biggest tours they’ve ever mounted. ADTR are even big enough to bring Radio 1-playlist botherers, Lower Than Atlantis, along as their main support. We made sure our man in Brighton, Mike Burnell, was there to photograph the both of them.

Asking Alexandria- live in Brighton 2014 by Mike Burnell Thrash Hits

Asking Alexandria are bloody massive. We can’t pretend this is some flash in the pan rise-to-fame – they’ve been slowly building their fanbase over the past five years, and there’s no denying that they’ve reached the size needed to play some of the biggest venues in the UK (before making the step up to arena-level) by putting in some hard graft. As well as many years of dedicated dicking about. That’s why we sent our man in Brighton, Mike Burnell, along to photograph the Brighton date of the band’s biggest headline UK tour to date.

Saint Vitus @ Damnation Festival – 01 November 2014

November 5th, 2014

Saint Vitus at Damnation Festival 2014 by Kirsty Garland Thrash Hits

Saint Vitus are deservedly one of the great institutions of doom metal. The Californians’ set on the main stage at Damnation 2014 was a career-spanning display of everything they’re still capable of. As much as Damnation has showcased up-and-coming talent over the years, its ability to give true legends a platform to showcase just why they’re considered as such is an equal reason why Damnation has clocked ten years at the top.

Sólstafir @ Damnation Festival – 01 November 2014

Solstafir at Damnation Festival 2014 by Kirsty Garland Thrash Hits

We couldn’t get in the room to review Sólstafir properly when they played Damnation Festival 2014. Not only were security having to operate a one-in-one-out policy to cope with the popularity of Icelandic four-piece, but by the time we made it to the PHD stage, the queue was spiralling out of site up a nearby staircase. What we could hear by lurking near the doors sounded pretty damn great, but we’re going to have to let our photographer Kirsty Garland’s photos do the talking for this one.

Raging Speedhorn @ Damnation Festival – 01 November 2014

Raging Speedhorn at Damnation Festival 2014 by Kirsty Garland Thrash Hits

Have we mentioned before how much we bloody love Raging Speedhorn? Do we really need to tell you that their set at Damnation 2014 was one of our highlights of the entire festival? And that the hints the band dropped on stage that they would soon be working on new material was the most exciting thing we’ve heard in months? Well, do we???

Orange Goblin @ Damnation Festival – 01 November 2014

November 5th, 2014

Orange Goblin at Damnation Festival 2014 by Kirsty Garland Thrash Hits

Believe it or not, 2014 was only Orange Goblin’s second time performing at Damnation Festival, the other time being back in 2007. Yep, it surprised us too. We thought that given that Ben Ward and co. are among the most long-running British stoner-doom types, they’d have occupied the stage more often than that at one of the UK’s now longest-running indoor festivals. Still, they were here for Damnation’s 10th birthday blowout and boy, did they bring it with both barrels.

Black Moth @ Damnation Festival – 01 November 2014

November 5th, 2014

Black Moth at Damnation Festival 2014 by Kirsty Garland Thrash Hits

Black Moth were another band who initially wrestled with the booming acoustics of the PHD stage, the high ceilings and resultant echoes squashing some of the precision that hides within their riffs. But Leeds is the band’s hometown, and through sheer force of personality and a setlist skewed towards the slower, moodier ends of both The Killing Jar and Condemned to Hope, Black Moth made sure their homecoming was an early afternoon highlight of Damnation 2014..

Corrupt Moral Altar @ Damnation Festival – 01 November 2014

November 5th, 2014

Corrupt Moral Altar at Damnation Festival 2014 by Kirsty Garland Thrash Hits

Corrupt Moral Altar’s opening set at Damnation Festival 2014 gets a lot of attention, even if the fidelity offered by the room doesn’t measure up. Just because the band make an unholy furious noise doesn’t mean that the acoustics of a room can’t mess with them. The PHD stage was in the Riley Smith Hall, a large hollow cube of a place, and all too much of the Liverpudlians’ sonic intensity was sucked up into the rafters, rather than roasting the packed crowd.
