Whitechapel
Recorrupted
Metal Blade

by Dan Pelic

The extended play music recording – a delicate challenge to produce as a cohesive and complete work, in order to leave a band as proud papas. Well, seems pops wasn’t around much on this one and his neglect has resulted in a dropout, crack-smoking failure of an EP.

This languid record contains but one original song and a cover, along with two remixes and an acoustic snoozer of ‘End of Flesh’ from 2010’s, A New Era of Corruption.

by Dan Pelic

As a genre, stoner rock has become much like a steak left too long on the barbecue because everyone got too drunk and high to tend to it: Overdone, dry, and tasteless.

As a band, Black Tusk are probably a bit too drunk and high to avoid embodying the most prevalent negative stereotypes of their genre: Senseless and forgettable riffing, shit vocals, and nonsensical lyrics.

When asked to review The Great Escape Artist, I was also offered the supposed real reason for the band’s last-minute cancellation at Reading — Dave Navarro’s horror in taking the stage to a near-empty tent while the sonic atrocity that is The Strokes were performing on the main stage. Apparently, right then and there, Mr Perry Farrell’s vocal cords decided to give way not only for that evening, but their subsequent performance at Leeds. *sniff sniff*

I guess we’re obliged to forgive them since they’re rock stars?

Earth Crisis
Neutralize The Threat
Century Media

by Dan Pelic

While Earth Crisis were undeniably an innovator in shaping the sound that became the metalcore genre, even they cannot advance the genre any further themselves – let alone with a single album. Neutralize The Threat is a respectable follow up to 2009’s To The Death, but it does little to inspire something new in the listener.

The pimply-faced internet junkies who doubted the fruits of this reincarnation on the metal message boards are most likely going to be lauding this release and feverishly trying to delete their past postings. It’s just that fucking good.

Top 10s of 2010 Banner-1 Thrash Hits

We often joke that our Deputy Editor, Hugh Platt, is a surly little so-and-so who doesn’t like anything. This isn’t true. He’s a surly little so-and-so who doesn’t like very much. Thankfully, the stuff he does like, he likes very much indeed. As with all our contributors, we’ve strong-armed him into choosing the the 10 records that got him the most excited over the last year – check them out after the jump.

Future Hits 070: Something About Death Or Dying

Something About Death Or Dying promo photo Thrash Hits

Something About Death Or Dying
From: New Jersey, USA
Lazy equation: (Norma Jean x Doomriders) – The Gaslight Anthem
Website: Myspace, Facebook

Thrash Hits verdict: We live for fresh music and this is it right here. We love, love, loved Chambers’ debut album earlier in 2010 and The Gaslight Anthem speak for themselves so a combination of the two was never going to be bad but we really weren’t preparaed for just how good SADOD were going to be. Groovy, tumultuous riffs that rise and fall with speedball energy, rounded off with vocals that carry an unbridled ferocity. Alex Rosamilia’s guitarwork is unrecognisable from his other band and Dan Pelic’s voice is one of the truest portrayals of anger you’re ever going to hear. It’s inspirational stuff.

Future Hits 040: Chambers

August 17th, 2009

Having played their second ever show in a sweatpit basement with Gallows in last month, we thought it might be nice to have a chat with the chaps from monstrous, new New Jersey hardcore mob, Chambers. They’re pretty special.

Sounds like: Gallows, The Ghost Of A Thousand, hardcore rock ‘n’ roll

Thrash Hits verdict: It’s rare that you instantly ‘get’ a band – especially so early on in their career but a couple of plays on their MySpace and we were hooked on their refreshingly beefy take on a now well-thumbed blueprint. The next step is getting their sweaty arses over to this side of the pond for some mad touring.

Steven Wilson 2015 promo photo Thrash Hits

The sun is out, the sun is shining, but we’re not slumming it in parks listening to terrible summer music just yet. Oh no. Some of us are making sure the beard-stroking, mind-expanding sphere that is Prog isn’t going unattended – step forward David Keevill, who returns with his latest column examining what the big stories and events in the world of Prog have been over the last few weeks…
