The Year in Death Metal with Rob McAuslan – 2014

January 6th, 2015

The Year in Death Metal with Rob McAuslan

We promise (really promise!) that this will be the last lookback-at-2014 thing we post. Except maybe a podcast (and that’s a big maybe). Whatever. We’re launching yet another of our splendid genre columns today, this time with one of our long-time death metal aficionados, Rob McAuslan, taking a quick look back at the biggest things that happened (or in one case, learned about what’s coming) in the wonderfully fluffy world of death metal.

The Year in Prog with David Keevill – 2014

January 2nd, 2015

Cult of Luna 2013 promo photo Thrash Hits

December is an empty month, filled with too many cash-in re-releases and tedious album-of-the-year content to make our monthly genre-columns thing really work. That’s why we asked David Keevill to give us a retrospective of the Big Things that happened in Prog in 2014, before getting back to the serious business of 2015 next month…

Thrash Hits TV: Raging Speedhorn – new album EXCLUSIVE!!1!

November 28th, 2014

Ahh, it’s like an early Christmas gift! We’ve made no secret how much we’re fanboys for Raging Speedhorn. We’ve gone on about them so much that they sent us a little video message before they head out on their first UK tour in damn-near nearly a decade kicks off next week. The whole bloody band pipes up to discuss their comeback, their upcoming tour, and – BEST OF ALL – some details about the brand new music coming from the band in 2015.

Yes, WE ARE VERY EXCITED.

Future Hits 186: Morð

From: Reykjavik, Iceland
Lazy equation: Íslenska svartur málmur með einhverjum gróp

Talking in broad strokes, black metal is all about emotion. It uses it to steamroller your senses and the ability of a successful black metal band in parlaying said emotion is an impressive one. It’s difficult to play a guitar incredibly fast but you can learn to do that much more easily than learning to convey your emotions. That’s why we knew Morð were the real deal when we saw them playing live at Eistnaflug Festival earlier this summer.

Sólstafir @ Damnation Festival – 01 November 2014

November 5th, 2014

Solstafir at Damnation Festival 2014 by Kirsty Garland Thrash Hits

We couldn’t get in the room to review Sólstafir properly when they played Damnation Festival 2014. Not only were security having to operate a one-in-one-out policy to cope with the popularity of Icelandic four-piece, but by the time we made it to the PHD stage, the queue was spiralling out of site up a nearby staircase. What we could hear by lurking near the doors sounded pretty damn great, but we’re going to have to let our photographer Kirsty Garland’s photos do the talking for this one.

Orange Goblin @ Damnation Festival – 01 November 2014

November 5th, 2014

Orange Goblin at Damnation Festival 2014 by Kirsty Garland Thrash Hits

Believe it or not, 2014 was only Orange Goblin’s second time performing at Damnation Festival, the other time being back in 2007. Yep, it surprised us too. We thought that given that Ben Ward and co. are among the most long-running British stoner-doom types, they’d have occupied the stage more often than that at one of the UK’s now longest-running indoor festivals. Still, they were here for Damnation’s 10th birthday blowout and boy, did they bring it with both barrels.

Wait, did we say outdoor festival season had ended with Reading and Leeds? Well, we were wrong. A whole truckload of bands descended upon Brighton Racecourse last weekend for Breakout Festival. We sent our newest snapper, Mike Burnell, down to shoot the best and the brightest for Thrash Hits.

Heavy Metal Sandwich 007: Tyler Carter + Michael Bohn of Issues

August 29th, 2014

The sandwich is possibly the greatest food-based invention. We need to be able to eat and post on Facebook at the same time. Sandwiches allow us to do this. The best thing about sandwiches, however, is that anybody can eat them. Vegetarian? Put some more salad in. Belly doesn’t like wheat? Use some gluten-free bread then! And everybody has a favourite sandwich. Even bands…

Issues2014promophotoThrashHits

Issues just played Reading & Leeds Festivals to a lot of people but a long, long time ago, we asked them the ultimate question: What is your favourite sandwich? Clearly, Tyler Carter and Michael Bohn eat a lot of sandwiches because they were very indecisive.

Why we need Rise Against now more than ever

August 20th, 2014

Rise Against have achieved both commercial and critical success. The former is the result of a well-formed career but to be as widely appreciated by the music press, a band needs to have some substance to their style and with the word ‘punk’ so easily used as a stick to beat some in the genre, David Keevill explains why Rise Against are flying the flag the highest at the moment.

Over the last few weeks, pictures and videos of the devastating air attacks in Gaza have filled social media. Accompanying the outpouring of grief and sympathy for those unwitting civilians caught in the crossfire between Hamas and the Israeli military is (rightly) anger on behalf of those unable to defend themselves. As anybody with a first, second or third hand opinion wades in to shout ill-formed slurs at their chosen target, Twitter and Facebook – the 21st Century’s soapbox equivalents – have become a cacophony.
