A really cynical man might suggest that Mountain Witch picked their name to benefit from any potential confusion with Witch Mountain. It doesn’t help that both bands exist in the broad spectrum of doom metal. Mountain Witch’s Cold River isn’t entirely comfortable with that label though – if you were to describe the album, the second from the Hamburg-based trio, in two words, then those two words would be “Seventies Homage”.

Future Hits 158: The Hell… you dick

THE HELL
From: Watford, UK
Lazy equation: UK Hardcore + a dozen different (anonymous) singers
URL: Facebook // Twitter

Thrash Hits verdict: It was back in June that we stumbled across the Facebook page for The Hell. A couple of hardcore luminaries had clicked like on this band page and it had no information and single figures of people were on it at the time. It was shrouded in mystery. We knew they had a European booking agent but he himself didn’t know who was in the band. He was asking us about them and he was working with The Hell. Then, at the start of July, they released one song with a bold proclamation that an album would be released the following week. It’s The (motherfucking) Hell, you dick.

Album: Stray From The Path – Anonymous

Stray From The Path
Anonymous

by Raz

This is the seventh album from the New Yorkers and Anonymous threatens to take Stray From The Path to the forefront of their scene. From the first memorable refrain in ‘False Flag’ of, “F. E. A. Are you listening,” Andrew Dijorio spits various lyrics detailing the entire gamut of anti-establishment-oriented views with righteous punk fury. The next song is called ‘Badge & A Bullet’. You get the vibe and it’s as convincing a political statement as you’re going to hear this year.

Maybe the slow burning classic rock jams of Down just aren’t cathartic enough for Philip. Maybe the increased vigour that he’s been displaying through Housecore Records has rekindled something deep inside one of the most metal hearts stalking our stages these days. Either way, Walk Through Exits Only is a heavy metal beast of an album.

Night Verses
Lift Your Existence

What is up with releasing a 74-minute debut album? On what planet does a new band have the kind of fanbase willing to dedicate well over an hour of their lives to one piece of music? It’s 2013 and people buy individual tracks; they stream one song online and then don’t even bother illegally downloading the rest of the album. What can be the thought process behind Night Verses releasing something so far above and beyond the universally accepted reasonable length of “around 40 minutes”?

I’ve spent a few days listening to The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here on and off and find myself struggling to say anything about if of any real worth other than, “It’s just not as good as Black Gives Way To Blue.” I mean… what more, as the reader and potential purchaser of the album, do you really need?

Occasionally a band pops out and they have zero profile but has something about them – something that’s going to make a few people take note, at least. Nero Di Marte are one of them. Having previously been called Murder Theory, the Italian quartet changed their name upon signing to Prosthetic. They also changed their style slightly, rounding off the techy edges found on their old material in favour of a slightly more palatable sound.

Album: Hang The Bastard – 2009-2012

Hang The Bastard

Holy Roar

by David Keevill

Hang the Bastard’s collection 2009-2012 may not be a eulogy (as they stress so empathically on their label’s website) to former frontman and co-founder Chris Barling, but it does serve to draw a line under the first chapter of HTB’s career. The release of this 32-track collection isn’t so much a fitting summation of what they’ve achieved so far (there’s no cherry picking here), rather a ‘throw everything at the wall and see what sticks’ approach, which makes the whole affair appear like they’re desperate to distance themselves from the band they were in a former life.

Future Hits 133: Dyst

Dyst
From: Bergen, Norway
Lazy equation: Metalcore – Bergen Black Metal x #m0sh
URL: Facebook / Twitter

Thrash Hits verdict: These five youngsters take none of the black metal influences from their hometown. Clearly a product of the modern age, they’ve learnt their music from the internet. They sound like Bring Me The Horizon, Killswitch Engage, The Devil Wears Prada. Filled with all sorts of minor harmonics and arpeggios, it’s #m0sh or screamo or whatever you want to call it and it’s pretty good. We speak to singer Joakim Vindenes to get his take.
