Manchester trio, Amplifier have announced the departure of bassist and founding member, Neil Mahony via an official statement:

“His real strength lies in his ability to generate great clouds of effects soundscapes, especially when improvising, through his bespoke and esoteric collection of pedals that we all built up together over the years.”

There is currently no change to their live commitments at this stage so we can only assume that a replacement is in the wings and that he/she will be just as great a bassist. Amplifier’s European tour with Anathema is due to start in Poland on 21 April 2012, ending at the London Koko on 03 May 2012.

Amplifier band promo photo 2011 octopus thrash hits

Amplifier released their third album, The Octopus at the start this year without the aid of a label. They’re more successful in 2011 than they ever have been and the album reached #5 in our Albums of 2011. We think Amplifier are great. Frontman, Sel Balamir took the time to talk to us about Muppets and squirrels whilst constructing the greatest meat-based nativity scene EVER.

We like Amplifier. When they released The Octopus earlier in 2011, we gave it a full on 6/6 and we said pretty much the same thing when we saw them live in London. We did think about offering the chance to go swimming with the band but instead you can win a pair of tickets to any date on their December 2011 tour, a copy of The Octopus AND a tshirt. It’s an awesome Amplifier goody bag!

The Octopus
Self-released

by Raziq Rauf

Manchester trio Amplifier are without a label for this third album, but have forged ahead with a remarkable independent spirit nonetheless. From first glance, it’s difficult to tell whether this double-disc concept album is the result of a band left to their own devices, or whether they’re a band with nothing left to lose and are giving it their last ounce for you, the listener, to contend with. Scratch the surface even slightly, however, and you will be in no doubt that it’s the latter.

Gear: Diezel VH4 guitar amplifier

February 2nd, 2010

In the first of a new regular series of supremely heavy equipment, Amit Sharma rocks and rolls his way over the amp that James bloody Hetfield’s guitar noise calls home. It’s not a massive surprise that he enjoyed playing it.

What the fuck – designer jeans?

No, not at all. Diezel are a boutique amplifier manufacturer based in Germany that specialise in hand wired high-gain valve amps, designed for the modern guitarist that wants something with more dirt than Dino Cazares’ porn collection.
