Freedom To The Slave Makers has taken quite a while to surface. After leaving Roadrunner Records in 2007 with mixed feelings from both the band and label, Betzefer regrouped in 2008 with with producer Warren Riker (who’s previously been behind the desk for both Korn and Down) and headed into the studio with the intention of releasing their next record before the year was out. Fast forward to 2011. Only surfacing for a mere handful of shows during the intervening period, Betfezer seemed to have very little to show for such prolonged delays.

Has there ever been a better time in the history of the UK underground than what we’ve seen in the last 5 years? True, we’ve seen many spectacular acts explode then implode, but they burned fast and burned hard. Now two of our favourite bands of last year have come together for a wonderful slab of 10″ grey vinyl – courtesy of Tangled Talk Records  – and they’re out to wreck your lives.

Glamour Of The Kill
The Summoning
Afflicted Music
23 January 2011

by Andy Parker

We’re only into the second month of the year and I already have a list of things that’ve really gotten on my tits in 2011:

  • That agonising wait between December’s and January’s pay cheque.
  • Big Fat Gypsy Weddings, because all my friends think it is amazing and I don’t get it and that makes me feel uncomfortable and oddly middle-class.
  • Vocalists who cannot shut the fuck up and have to harmonise when they have nothing better to do.

Which is where Glamour Of The Kill come in. A band who, for the last few years, have been tightening their trousers, dying the shit out of their Toni & Guy coiffed hair-dos, and being pushed around the press to seemingly little or no avail.

Mother I

by Andy Parker

Emphasising the true meaning of the phrase progressive when it comes to music, Brighton’s Lithurgy have travelled across Europe with the likes of Textures, Ephel Duath, and TesseracT, as well as nailing a much-praised performance at Bloodstock Open Air 2010 along the way. Mother I is the band’s latest attempt to elevate their profile to match that of those would-be peers. [Read more →]

Our Color Green (The Singles)

by Andy Parker

With hiatus-after-hiatus, mixed-up side projects, debilitating health issues and quite frankly two of the hugest egos on the planet, Glassjaw are finally gearing up for the eventual release of the ‘much awaited’ new album later in 2011. Before that though, Glassjaw (well, Daryl Palumbo, Justin Beck and 2 others) have decided to released this digital EP of non-album singles.

Top 10s of 2010: Our Contributors (Part 1)

December 14th, 2010

Top 10s of 2010 Banner-1 Thrash Hits

It’s that time of year again – 2010 is coming to a close, and we’re left looking back on what’s been another fantastic 12 months in the world of heavy music. Over the past few weeks, we’ve harassed our contributors into making some tough choices – no doubt shedding a few tears along the way – and whittling down 2010’s releases into their own personal Top 10 favourite records put out over the year gone by.

The world has become niche. And a niche in itself is cliche, far more cliche than the mainstream with the same old lines, the same hooks and to many metalheads’ dismay – a chorus that kicks ass. So in steps Taproot – remember them?

Album: Stone Temple Pilots – Stone Temple Pilots

March 27th 2008. After a 40 minute wait, in true egocentric rock’n’roll style, Velvet Revolver finally took to the stage at the Brighton Centre for what proved to be their final performance, and this reviewer’s eyes bore witness to something quite magical. Sadly, Velvet Revolver was a short-lived fairytale, one that ended with yet another stay in the state pen from front man Scott Weiland, and his subsequent departure from VR to reunite with his real family – Stone Temple Pilots.
