Slash carries a name, and an image, that has become synonymous with rock music; from the iconic opening blast of ‘Welcome to the Jungle’, through to his bolshy groove-ridden tenure for Velvet Revolver, this is a man who’s been an ambassador for hard rock ever since the late-80s heyday of Guns N’ Roses. It’s down to being such an enduring masthead of rock music – even if his cultural zenith peaked twenty years ago – that every new Slash record must drag the weight of his much more prosperous days behind him.

Poll: Axl Rose vs Cake

April 17th, 2012

So Axl Rose refused to acknowledge the accolade of being inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, allowing the rest of band to celebrate with a better singer, but does it really matter? Our friend, Adam made this excellent point:

“People may remember [Marlon] Brando refusing his Oscar, but more remember him for getting really fat and a bit shit…”

Fair. Tell us what you’re going to remember Axl Rose for in the poll below. And obviously, if you think we’ve missed something, call us dicks in a comment below.

Monsters Of Rock BBC2 Arena Thrash Hits

Over the Bank Holiday weekend, we kept ourselves entertained thanks to a heads up from MetalSucks.net that the entire of Penelope Spheeris’ classic documentary on 80s metal, The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years, was streaming in its entirety. Its US-centric viewpoint got us thinking – surely there must be some more UK-centric metal documentaries out there? Little did we know that the results of just a little bite of searching would be crammed so full of awesomeness.

December 19th, 2008

The Black Spiders are the freshest old shit you’ll be hearing in 2009. They’ve been likened to wanking in church whilst listening to Sabbath. Add “on acid” to that and we’ll punch you in the face. We spoke to Spider. What a mint name.

Top 5: Biffy Clyro – Simon Neil chooses his Top 5 Rock Eccentrics

December 2nd, 2008

Biffy Clyro singer/guitarist Simon Neil took the time to have a chat with Anne Waites about his Top 5 favourite eccentrics in the world of rock. We agreed that there are a lot and that beards are very important.

Rivers Cuomo, Weezer
“He went through the huge beard phase, tried to deconstruct the technique of writing a pop song, sat in his room painted black for three years, realised he didn’t want to do it and now he plays soccer and he’s letting the other guys in the band write songs. He’s probably my favourite eccentric ever.”

Axl Rose, Guns N’ Roses
“Total genius! I think I’m the only person in the world that still rates Axl Rose. I’m mega excited about the new Guns N’ Roses album. He’s the only person that could spend 50 million dollars of a record label’s money. That’s something brilliant in my eyes. It’s shaped up to be a corking record.”

Chinese Democracy

by Raziq Rauf

How much idle conjecture has there been over Chinese Democracy? Axl Rose has had 17 years to turn this vanity project into absolute gold. It has to be a masterpiece. It has to be the best album of the 21st century.

I say “vanity project” because Rose is the only founding member remaining in Guns N’ Roses. I say “vanity project” because he has taken 17 bloody years to write one album!
