Future Hits 177: EXES + first listen to Reptilian

EXES
From: London, UK
URLs: Facebook // Bandcamp

Our verdict: This is a rock band! Formed from the ashes of Tropics – a band we were quite partial to – they have become slightly odder in their melodies and there seem to be more melodies on what evidence we’ve heard so far, which we are very much down with. The great news is that there’s still a lot of rocking to be done by Exes and so they’ve let us put their new song, ‘Reptilian’ up on this site. That’s bloody good. Here’s a wee interview with Jodie Cox too. Read, listen, enjoy.

Issues band new promo photo 2013 thrash hits tyler carter woe is me

Last week saw R&B/metal crossover merchants Issues play their first London show at the Islington Academy, as part of a co-headline jaunt around they UK with Crown The Empire. Gavin Lloyd caught up with the band’s two front men Tyler Carter (he’s the one that sings the nice bits) and Michael Bohn (he’s the shouty one) to discuss their unique sound, their taste in music, their fans and twerking, obviously.

Interview: Michael ‘Padge’ Paget from Bullet For My Valentine

February 14th, 2013

bfmv 2013

Hey! It’s Valentine’s Day? Is that a rubbish enough segue into a Bullet For My Valentine interview? Probably not. Oh well. As regular readers of Thrash Hits know, Bullet For My Valentine are most definitely a band we have opinions (fast forward to 33mins 13 secs…) that sometimes get us in to a bit of trouble with them. So when Nick Hagan emailed us late last year telling us that he had some time interviewing Michael “Padge” Paget from thet band (that’s him lurking behind Matt Tuck above and looking like he might bite your throat out), we said “yeah, okay,” with all the enthusiasm that two-word response implies.

That said, we do wonder what Padge would say to us now after we published Raz’s drunken 6/6 (ahem) review of Temper Temper….

Future Hits 133: Dyst

Dyst
From: Bergen, Norway
Lazy equation: Metalcore – Bergen Black Metal x #m0sh
URL: Facebook / Twitter

Thrash Hits verdict: These five youngsters take none of the black metal influences from their hometown. Clearly a product of the modern age, they’ve learnt their music from the internet. They sound like Bring Me The Horizon, Killswitch Engage, The Devil Wears Prada. Filled with all sorts of minor harmonics and arpeggios, it’s #m0sh or screamo or whatever you want to call it and it’s pretty good. We speak to singer Joakim Vindenes to get his take.

Friends: The One with the Black Metal Band

January 21st, 2013

Despite the last episode airing in 2004, Friends was on Channel 4 until 2011. The six cast members went on to form a black metal band called Venner.

By the way, one of those sentences is not true. Whatever, we reckon Rachel looks the most like a pretty Norwegian man.

Sunday Slaylist: A crash course in Neurosis

Neurosis 2012 promo photo Thrash Hits

A lot of new music has been getting us excited recently – in the past weeks, new music has emerged from the likes of Converge, Deftones and Pig Destroyer to name b but three – but nothing has gotten us quite so excited as the new Neurosis track that the band released into the wilds of the world wide web this week. Not only is ‘At the Well’ an killer appetiser for Honor Found in Decay, but it sent us spiralling back through Neurosis’ extensive back catalogue, to remind ourselves just why a) this gaggle of Californians are so important, and b) just why we love them so damn much.

Evile and playing a free charity gig next week. Go along and donate and thrash out and what have you.

Evile 2010 promo photo Thrash Hits

Thoe UK leading thrash revivalists, Evile, are playing a charity show in London down at the Old Blue Last on Tuesday next week. It’s free entry, but since it’s a charity show, they’ll be taking donations on the door for the British Lung Foundation. That seems entirely reasonable to us – after all, what kind of prick goes to a free charity show and moans about making a donation on the door? That’s right, no-one, that’s who.

Infographic! Heavy Metal band logos 101

April 16th, 2012

We love infographics. They make everything really easy to understand. We’ve dissected band logos before but this particular graphic explains it all in sub-categories and with examples. Spend five minutes with this and you’ll be standing in front of the Bloodstock poster pointing at bands and saying, “Satan-friendly… Sharp ‘n’ pointy… Hmmm… Sharp ‘n’ pointy.”. You’ll see.

metal logos explained 101 for dummies thrash hits 2012

The Thrash Hits logo is definitely in the Sharp ‘n’ Pointy category, probably in the Classic sub-section because it’s pretty simple. Does the blue and red and paint spatter make it a Variation? Hmmm…
