Frequencies
Self-Release
19 June 2014

by Pete Long

With a new full player due out later this year, London-based De Profundis want your attention. The four song EP Frequencies is their means of grabbing it and to ensure it works, they’re releasing it for free. Considering the quality of their 2012 outing The Emptiness Within, with its Death-meets-Opeth take on Death Metal, that’s a generous offer.

If You Buy One Thing This Week: EP2 by Yards

June 2nd, 2014

Yards promo photo Thrash Hits

We first wrote about Yards almost a year ago and we wrote that about six months after we realised they were well good. Yes, you might think that we like to keep things from you but we actually really like telling you about our favourite new sounds. With two members from two of our favourite bands (The Ghost of a Thousand and Astrohenge), it is not surprising that we like Yards. The good news is that the Brighton/London hardcore quartet have released their second EP and it’s called EP2.

Live: Mutoid Man @ Los Angeles The Echo – 19 March 2014

March 26th, 2014

Mutoid Man promo photo by Yvonne Jukes Thrash Hits

It’s nice seeing a band comprised of musicians that you have incredible respect for but it’s bittersweet when it’s a band that, for a variety of reasons, not many people will ever get the chance to see. This was the situation when Raz went down to see Mutoid Man, who have members of Converge and Cave In in their midst, supported by Black Mare in LA.

Six things we learned while watching Mutoid Man in LA…

Sunday Slaylist: RIP Pat Egan from Relapse Records

February 24th, 2013

Patlapse Thrash Hits

This week we’re turning over the Sunday Slaylist to something a little different – we want you to go buy something. On Monday 18 February, Pat Egan, Relapses Records’ Director of Retail Sales, died following a the result of complications with a case of pneumonia. To raise money for Pat’s daughter’s college fund, the folks over at Relapse have gone and put together a compilation of 20 of the finest bands ever to have worked with the label – and we think it’d be a damn fine gesture if a few of our readers joined us in buying it, in recognition of the awesome music Pat helped bring us over the years, as well as to help out the family of a fellow metal fan when they need it most.

Future Hits 124: American Standards

American Standards

Lazy equation: (The Chariot – optimism) x Glassjaw covering El Diablo-era Will Haven

Thrash Hits verdict: We first heard about American Standards thanks to a minor bit of Twitter buzz we caught wind of around the release of their Still Life EP earlier this year. It ticked a staggering number of our musical boxes, with us being able to hear shades of an impressive number of post-hardcore and screamo bands that characterised much of our listening habits throughout our pitiful, frustrated youth. We dropped an email to the band’s vocalist, Brandon Kellum, for the latest inductees to the (semi-) illustrious ranks of bands featured in our Future Hits column.

FREE STUFF: Relapse Records have posted loads of their back catalogue up for online streaming

May 30th, 2012

Relapse Records have gone and posted an enormous chunk of their back catalogue online via their official Bandcamp page, where you can stream the whole damn lot FOR FREE. Now despite some reporting to the contrary, it’s not their entire back catalogue (or at least, it isn’t yet), but it is a fair old part of it. Even so, it still means that you can listen to over 100 releases by Relapse, including records by Death, Pig Destroyer, Rotten Sound, Red Fang, Toxic Holocaust, and a whole lot more besides. The only real omissions from Relapse’s Bandcamp profile are some of the bands that used to be signed to the label but aren’t anymore – for those acts, which include Mastodon and The Dillinger Escape Plan among their number – Relapse have posted single sample songs from the albums in question. We don’t know why you’d moan about this though – it’s still more free and legal music for you to stream.

Obviously Relapse are hoping you’ll reward them for their online generosity by shelling out for a release or two – such as Baroness’ forthcoming Yellow & Green album – and why wouldn’t you? Remember kids, whether you’re a renegade who’d torrent his own grandmother given the chance, or if you’re the kind of person who’ll only listen to vinyl that you preferably bought in an actual real-world record store, it’s important that you support the bands you love. Because if you don’t, they might not be able to afford to keep making that music you enjoy so much.

Now if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to order some Brutal Truth albums at Relapse’s online store.

Future Hits 107: I Am Heresy

I Am Heresy

From: Delaware/Maryland/New Jersey, United States
Lazy equation: Angry dads + Their angry kids = Tech Metal + Hardcore
URL: Facebook

Thrash Hits Verdict:Boysetsfire teases us with a reunion tour, even playing at Reading Festival 2011 and retreat back to the ether. The Casting Out calls it a day shortly after signing to Eyeball Records, Chambers unleash but one album, discharge their vocalist, and fizzle out. What does this mean? It means a bunch of dudes with jack shit to do.

Thankfully, this group of men (and boys) managed to reach out and touch one another to bring us a head-on collision of Boysetsfire and Chambers. It’s heavy metal enjoined with the youthful vigor of Nathan Gray’s own 17-year-old son, Simon, and BSF band mate, Josh Latshaw’s son, Jonah.

So far, we’ve been offered two tracks (download them below) ahead of an upcoming album on Magic Bullet Records. The music is certainly rooted in traditional metal and hardcore, but the twisted wreckage of bands gone past gives us a fusion worthy of original praise. We speak to Nathan Gray about his new project…

EP: Girlfight – Defamate

Girlfight
Defamate
25 October 2011
Emerald Moon Records

by Andy Parker

Very much in the vein of Cancer Bats or Trash Talk, Pittsburgh’s Girlfight are sharp, punchy and over in a mere matter of minutes. In just four tracks spread over just eight short minutes, the quartet blend chameleon-like grooves in with some excellent loud/quiet concepts, without sacrificing the “loud” part of that equation.
