Sunday Slaylist: RIP Pat Egan from Relapse Records

February 24th, 2013

Patlapse Thrash Hits

This week we’re turning over the Sunday Slaylist to something a little different – we want you to go buy something. On Monday 18 February, Pat Egan, Relapses Records’ Director of Retail Sales, died following a the result of complications with a case of pneumonia. To raise money for Pat’s daughter’s college fund, the folks over at Relapse have gone and put together a compilation of 20 of the finest bands ever to have worked with the label – and we think it’d be a damn fine gesture if a few of our readers joined us in buying it, in recognition of the awesome music Pat helped bring us over the years, as well as to help out the family of a fellow metal fan when they need it most.

Photos: Baroness @ Sheffield Corporation – 13 August 2012

Baroness 2012 promo photo Thrash Hits

About five minutes after Gary Wolstenholme emailed us his incredible photos from the Sheffield show of Baroness’ recent UK tour, we got the news that the band had been involved in a horrific bus crash just outside of Bath. And we were torn. We really wanted to show these incredible shots off to the world, but at the same time we didn’t want to seem ghoulish and trying to capitalise on the publicity of the tragedy. Well, since the band are now all safely out of hospital – and given that all of the band’s tour dates for the rest of 2012 have been cancelled – we figured now was the time for us to show you these awesome shots in all their awesome glory.

Yeah, we used “awesome” twice in one sentence. Baroness are that kind of band.

The Thrash Hits Podcast 010: Bloodstock Open Air 2012 REVIEWED

August 20th, 2012

Thrash Hits Podcast 1

With Bloodstock Open Air 2012 now over, Hugh Platt and Tom Dare have reconvened in the studio to look back at the highs and lows of Thrash Hits’ Bloodstock experience this year – talking about our high and lows, the winners and losers, and just what Tom was doing with a Hairy Helmet and an Old Growler on the Friday night.

We also took time out to see what nonsense MegaDave has been spouting this week, to discuss Peter Dolving’s revelations about what really went on with his split from The Haunted earlier this year, as well as a check-up on the situation with Baroness, who suffered a truly awful bus crash last week. Get well soon, guys.

The Thrash Hits Podcast 008: Small But Perfectly Formed

August 2nd, 2012

Thrash Hits Podcast 1

It’s a short and (not so) sweet podcast from Raz and Hugh this week, looking at some last minute controversies surrounding Hevy Festival, the consequences of British metal bands moving to major labels, and what the impact will be of Terror deciding to boycott the Czech Republic on their forthcoming European tour in support of Randy Blythe. We might’ve been too busy being drunk and watching the Olympics this last week to prattle on for as long as usual, but that doesn’t stop it degenerating into a discussion regarding the quality of a naked arse pinned to the wall of Raz’s office. What on Earth does that mean? We guess you’re going to have to download the podcast to find out.

The Thrash Hits Podcast 006: The Art of the Perfect Gig

July 18th, 2012

Thrash Hits Podcast 1

It’s been a little longer than normal between podcasts, and it’s for one simple reason – we’ve been to so many gigs since the last podcast that we simply haven’t found the time to be in the same room for long enough to record an episode. Handily, that’s the inspiration for the main topic of conversation on this week’s episode – just what is it that makes a gig great?

Did any of the gigs we’ve been too recently – including Faith No More, Pearl Jam, Baroness, Monuments, Kerouac and Sacred Mother Tongue to name but a few – made the grade as “classic” gigs? Raz and Hugh debate this question, as well as going over their all-time favourite shows.

Album: Bison b.c. – Dark Ages

May 18th, 2010

Bison B.C.
Dark Ages
Metal Blade
13 April 2010

by Mike Strata

Good band names are, clearly, very hard to come by, and whilst “Bison b.c.” may not be top of the band-name class, they certainly deserve some extra points for choosing a name which perfectly evokes their sound. Whether their inspiration comes from the bovine beast of the same name, or perhaps the rock-hard end boss from Streetfighter II, there’s no doubt that the noise the band creates on Dark Ages is as heavy, muscular and powerful as either of their possible namesakes. Emerging from the same primordial stew as their sonic cousins Mastodon and Baroness, Bison b.c. serve up a heady mixture of metal and sludge with a few curveballs thrown in for good measure. A mixture which, in theory at least, sounds more than promising….but in reality there’s an unshakeable feeling that something is missing.

Metal Mark gets ticketed for drinking too much; hangs out with Baroness and Behemoth

February 17th, 2010

What’s going on my metal friends! After two months I have returned to let you in on what I’ve been up to. Some of you may have been worried that I died of alcohol poisoning, maybe I should have three or four times, but I’m here! Luckily I could spend more on alcohol recently, since there were only a few shows coming through the Atlanta area. It worked out perfectly!
