Since The Dillinger Escape Plan brought technical metal to the masses in the early part of the last decade, the UK has boasted a thriving (often almost overloaded) scene of bands keen to show off their lightening quick fretwork and dense structural intricacies. Visions are the latest group of youngsters throwing their two penneth into this particular ring, with their ten-track debut album released on Basick records, a label which has in recent times established itself as the premier stable of UK tech metal.

Live: The League of Extraordinary Djentlemen (Periphery, TesseracT + Monuments) @ London Camden Underworld – 11 February 2011

It was one of the most hotly-anticipated metal gigs of 2011 so far. Over the past couple of years, Maryland metallers Periphery have increased the popularity of Djent – the genre of jarring, one-significant-chorded tech metal that Meshuggah created a quarter of a century ago. British djent stars, TesseracT are signed to the US arm of Century Media and Monuments are being talked about as one of the next big things. Of course we were there!

There are some really cool record labels around so we thought we’d start talking about and talking to a few of them. Seeing as Basick Records are celebrating their 5th birthday this weekend with a free gig in Luton, we decided to talk to label boss and general awesome guy, Nathan “Barley” Phillips. In return, he sent us a naked photo of himself…

Chimp Spanner isn’t a band – it’s a single man, very much in the Nine Inch Nails = Trent Reznor kind of way. The man in question is one Paul Antonio Ortiz: playing every part on the album, recording every note, applying the polish and recently forming a live band (featuring members of Fellsilent) to tour the record, Chimp Spanner is very much a one-stop shop when it comes to technical virtuoso instrumentalism.

Back in the olden days….for every album you owned, you had to pause half way through to turn it over on the record player. CDs were still the future, and the closest you really got to anything being classed as “epic” was the likes of Iron Maiden or Helloween chucking out a 10+ minute long track. Fast forward to today, and you have the likes of Between The Screams giving us a complete and disconcerting aural epic of an album with Our Last Days On Earth.

As debut albums go, this ain’t a bad one. Some are barnstorming, prophetic visions of what music should be, whilst some meekly near their heads before sneaking back into muggy obscurity. This album by Bristol’s Evita rests snugly somewhere in the middle; it’s a bit like the Anthony Worrall Thompson of metal.

Future Hits 024: Evita

May 4th, 2009

Heavy music on these fair isles is as strong as it’s ever been. That’s why we’ve caught up with Bristol’s freshest charges, Evita. We had a chat to guitarist, Daniel Cranney about naming a metal band after a film with Madonna in it.

2008 into 2009: Evita

December 28th, 2008

Bristol metallers, Evita, are currently off recording their debut album in preparation for touring their balls off in 2009. We caught up with guitarist, Daniel Cranney, to see how 2008 was for them.

What was your highlight of 2008?
It was a really good year in general; we had a lot of fun and met some great people. It amazing signing to Basick Records, going on tour in Europe in August, and going into the studio to record our debut album.

What’s the worst thing that happened to you in 2008?
We bought a new van (called Hamish), and in died within 2 months, so it was a pretty massive waste of money. Also, we were driving back from Leeds in our mate’s car and the wheel came off on the motorway when we were going 70mph. That was pretty scary. [Read more →]

December 21st, 2008

Here comes another experimental metal band from Berkshire. This is No Made Sense. Drummer, Sam Ward talks to us about losing his cat for two months and hating New Year’s Eve. Crazy fool!

What was your highlight of 2008?
Finally finishing our album (it took nine months!) or the Exit Ten show in Reading, great gig, great beer, great friends.

What’s the worst thing that happened to you in 2008?
My cat went missing for eight weeks but he came back… 2008 was pretty uneventful.
