Every Time I Die are one of my favourite bands in the world. They encapsulate everything that is good about heavy music. Riffs, melody, excellent merch. I wouldn’t own six ETID tshirts otherwise.

Is that excessive? No – they’re all awesome shirts. Is this going to be a balanced, honest review? It’s the only way. Was I drunk? No – it was the first time sober at an ETID show and I was scared. Especially when I nipped out for a cigarette and had to bustle my way past half a dozen handbags (after they’d hit me in the belly, of course) and then the very ample smoking area was full. What was this madness? So many women. So much cancer. Every Time I Die!

While only in it’s third year, Hevy Music Festival has already established itself as the leading outdoor festival in the UK when it comes to hardcore. We sent some of our best men down to cover it – Tomas Doyle to handle the words, and Ben Gibson to sort out our pictures – and even though Friday was the “short” day of the festival, they still managed to get up to mischief…

Our resident London photographer, Ben Gibson is a massive emo. This has led to him being in love with Essex emos, We Are The Ocean. They released their second album, Go Now And Live last week and they coincidentally played a headline show in Camden last week as well with Watford emos, Lower Than Atlantis and French hardcore lot, Vera – the odd ones out by not being even vaguely wet sounding. It was one of the most hotly-anticipated metal gigs of 2011 so far. Over the past couple of years, Maryland metallers Periphery have increased the popularity of Djent – the genre of jarring, one-significant-chorded tech metal that Meshuggah created a quarter of a century ago. British djent stars, TesseracT are signed to the US arm of Century Media and Monuments are being talked about as one of the next big things. Of course we were there!
