Best of 2013: Top 6 Opinion

January 14th, 2014

BEST-OF-2013-Opinion

By pretty much any metric we care to think about, 2013 was a great year for Thrash Hits. If we look over the raw numbers, it was our most successful year ever, with more people reading the site, more people coming back to the site, and more people sticking around and actually reading our stuff than ever before. Seeing how every other website these days seems to be degenerating to nothing more than clickbait listicles with “You won’t believe…”-style headlines, we think that last point is of particular importance.

Before we really get our teeth into 2014, we thought we’d make our holiday slacking last another couple of days by looking back at the content from the last twelve months that helped make it our best ever year. First up: our top 6 opinion pieces.

Album: Sick Of It All – Nonstop

November 28th, 2011

Sick Of It All
Nonstop
Century Media
31 October 2011

by Alex Andrews

This is a strange one. To celebrate their 25th anniversary, Sick Of It All have decided to compile 20 career-spanning “hits” together on one disk. Only the New York hardcore veterans have gone back and re-recorded them all with the benefits of modern technology and a Danish metal producer behind the helm. Stranger still is that the band’s 1997 classic ‘Good Looking Out’ fails to make the cut whilst ‘Step Down’ – quite clearly the band’s finest moment, as anyone who remembers the P-Rock TV channel will testify – suffers from the same fate.

Top 10s of 2010: Raziq Rauf

December 17th, 2010

Top 10s of 2010 Banner-1 Thrash HitsWhen we sent out the rules for our Top 10s of 2010 content to our contributors, we kept it simple – pick 10 records that came out in 2010, put them in order of preference, and send their choices over to us. It called for some tough decisions, sure – with only 10 records to choose, everyone was forced to leave out at least one record they loved.

Everyone that is, except for Raziq Rauf, Thrash Hits’ Editor-in-Chief. Raz couldn’t make up his mind, so decided he was going to have three entries for the no.10 spot on his Top 10 list. Why? Because he’s the boss, that’s why.

Top 10s of 2010 Banner-1 Thrash Hits

We often joke that our Deputy Editor, Hugh Platt, is a surly little so-and-so who doesn’t like anything. This isn’t true. He’s a surly little so-and-so who doesn’t like very much. Thankfully, the stuff he does like, he likes very much indeed. As with all our contributors, we’ve strong-armed him into choosing the the 10 records that got him the most excited over the last year – check them out after the jump.

Top 10s of 2010: Tom Dare

December 16th, 2010

Top 10s of 2010 Banner-1 Thrash Hits

If you’ve been a regular reader of Thrash Hits over the last 12 months, you’ll be familiar with the name Tom Dare – the man’s written over sixty album reviews for us in 2010. He also likes to stink up Twitter and the Gill and Beez Facebook page, so we’re sure those of you of an argumentative persuasion will be very familiar with Mr Dare by now. Tom’s tastes run to the darker, more br00tal side of metal, so you can his Top 10 albums of the year to focus a lot more on black and death metal than those of our other contributors.

Tom also like power metal and Fairyland, but we don’t hold it against him.

Top 10s of 2010 Banner-1 Thrash Hits

It’s that time of year again – 2010 is coming to a close, and we’re left looking back on what’s been another fantastic 12 months in the world of heavy music. Over the past few weeks, we’ve harassed our contributors into making some tough choices – no doubt shedding a few tears along the way – and whittling down 2010’s releases into their own personal Top 10 favourite records put out over the year gone by.

Skunk Anansie
Smashes and Trashes: The Greatest Hits
One Little Indian
02 November 2009

by Jon Kerr

John Major’s Britain was embarrassing: I mean no-one gets inspired by the kid who wet himself at school, do they? In searching for a new identity, the county went indie-mad and started flying the Union Jack to a soundtrack of Oasis, Radiohead, Manic Street Preachers and Travis. It was the era of ‘Britpop’ and his less aspirational brother ‘Britrock’.
