Zakk Wylde Black Label Society Download 2012 Thrash Hits

Zakk Wylde came out wearing a Native American head-dress, and the Black Label Society stage banner featured lots of Chinese dragons. We’re not sure what the mixed message we’re getting here is supposed to be, but we figured it was best to let it lie and to let Black Label Society get on with the business of bombarding us with pinch harmonics. Before we get the ball rolling it has to be said I quite like a bit of Hatebreed. I can’t say that there is a perfect album end to end, but they sure do know how to make some floor-punching, dick-shrivelling stompers that are always accompanied by chest beating choruses. ‘Straight To Your Face’, ‘Doomsayer’, ‘This Is Now’ or ‘I Will Be Heard’ all result in my car going bat shit crazy with my crew slamming one another on the back seat.  But will this debut solo record from Jamey Jasta prove that there more to the man than a head scarf and a huge gob?

March 14th, 2011

We went to see Black Label Society at Hammersmith Apollo last month and Jesus H Hetfield, our ears are still ringing. While we were there we just had to ask Godsized on how an unsigned metal band from Croydon, with only two EPs to their name, gets to support Black Label Society on the entire European leg of the Berzurkus 2011 Tour.

Live & Photos: Black Label Society + Godsized @ London Hammersmith Apollo – 21 February 2011

March 1st, 2011

Zakk Wylde could easily be the most metal guitarist of all time. Last time he played Wembley Arena with Ozzy he was the support and the headliner. He even had his own half hour solo in the middle of the latter set and was on stage for pretty much three hours straight. That’s pretty metal. So we thought we’d head down to Hammersmith Apollo and try counting the number of pinched harmonics the mountain man had to offer in one night. We lost count before the first song had finished…

Live: Ozzy Osbourne @ London Roundhouse, Saturday 03 July 2010

July 12th, 2010

With Ozzy Osbourne bringing his new six-stringer to London for the first time, it made sense for use to send our residient guitar geek, Amit Sharma, to see if Gus G is up to the task of replacing Zakk Wylde.

With Ozzy Osbourne’s newest effort, Scream, hailed as one of his best in recent years, or at least as a step back towards a harder rock edge, tickets for this mini-tour of smallish venues went pretty quick. Zakk or no Zakk, this tour would be the perfect opportunity to catch the Prince of Fucking Darkness in an intimate setting. What made tonight even sweeter was that it was part of this year’s iTunes Festival, therefore free if you won a ticket.

The reason you’re not going to High Voltage Festival is that you’re an idiot

March 31st, 2010

With all out “Download Festival this, Sonisphere Festival that, Oh look Reading & Leeds” blathering recently, we’ve really missed out on emphasising one fact about the upcoming UK festival season: that High Voltage Festival, frankly, looks like it’s going to piss all over everyone else. The fact that it was confirmed today that Opeth will be playing their only UK festival show of 2010 there merely cements that fact.

A to Z of the Noughties: Slayer to Zakk Wylde

November 20th, 2009

Where were you on the night before the dawn of the New Millennium? Jon Kerr was getting a pit going in Jilly’s Rockworld, Manchester. We’ve asked him to summarise the ten years since then in all things metal in a handy A to Z

Slayer
No Slayer, no thrash. Right? Following their four classic ’80s albums, Slayer’s four ’90s albums received a varied reception as the band branched out in style. During this last decade, Slayer have succeeded in cementing their classic status thanks mainly to God Hates Us All and the return-to-form Christ Illusion. Dozens of metal’s biggest names have toured with Slayer since the turn of the century including In Flames, Children of Bodom, Biohazard, Cradle of Filth, Lamb of God, Marilyn Manson and Amon Amarth. Lombardo has been back behind the kit and we all worship Kerry King. The release of World Painted Blood sees Slayer head towards it’s 30th Anniversary…
