Bands who rely on retrospection as the main thrust to their music often sound tired, contrived and all out-of-ideas. There is a certain charm to recycling and incorporating a sound into your own musical framework, but overuse it and you betray any chance at your own invention. Yet whilst bands might throw a flirty wink to Led Zeppelin, or snaffle a couple of riffs off Black Sabbath, there are only a few like Rival Sons who can transport you back forty years and still manage not to be a museum piece.

Wet Nuns combo live at Liverpool Sound City c/o Matt Thomas Thrash Hits

Liverpool Sound City is what happens when a load of people get together and decide to host a 3-day music/tech conference in the North of England. Basically – it’s what The Great Escape is to the South, and what In The City used to be for Manchester. It’s pretty damn sweet.

The history of rock and blues have been so mixed and muddied together over the course of history that attempting to pick apart their various genomes and how they all interact with each other is almost a failed endeavour from the start. Now that the former Screaming Trees vocalist, Mark Lanegan, has somewhat audaciously thrown disco into the mix as well with his new album, we’re even less sure where to begin….
