Sunday Slaylist: Hevy Festival 2013 – what might’ve been…

August 4th, 2013

Hevy 2013 cancelled Thrash Hits

This weekend would’ve been the fifth Hevy Festival…but as you no doubt know by now, the festival was forced to cancel their event this year. They tried to schedule a replacement all-dayer at the Brixton Academy here in London, featuring some of the biggest bands on this year’s (cancelled) bill…but as you also know by now, they had to cancel that too.

It’s not been the best year for Hevy Festival, truth be told.

We love Jägermeister. We hate what it does to us when we drink it irresponsibly, but we love it. Skindred, Therapy?, Black Spiders and Skindred love it enough to have been part of the Jägermeister Music Tour. It was only £5 to get in and Brixton Academy was SOLD OUT. What a great celebration of drunk metallers!

Six things we learned when we drank too much Jägermeister in London:

Yeah, it’s that tour. The one the US had last year and we were all really jealous about. Oh well. We got it too. Mastodon and The Dillinger Escape Plan released the Thrash Hits Album of the Year of 2011 and 2010 respectively. Red Fang released an album last year but it went largely unnoticed. Shit happens. The good news is that we went to Brixton (and Manchester) to see this tour. Is that good news? It is. It definitely is.

Six things we learnt when we saw Mastodon/TDEP/Red Fang at Brixton

Live & Photos: Defenders of the Faith @ London Brixton Academy – 04 December 2011

December 16th, 2011

We love a bit of metal so we went down to Brixton Academy to see Trivium headline Metal Hammer’s Defenders of the Faith tour with In Flames, Ghost and Rise To Remain in tow. Insense played as well but they played really, really early and Gary didn’t even manage to take photos of them up in Manchester. There are loads of photos. Go click on them and then go visit Gary’s website because he’s awesome.

Six things we figured out whilst watching all the metal in Brixton:

When people look back on the package tours of 2011, it’s almost guaranteed that this is one that will sit among the very top of them. The ingenious booking of four different sounding bands that are all pushing boundaries within the same scene resulted in at least half the tour selling out. With queues snaking around Brixton and fans racing to get to the front barrier, it’s obvious that this is a crowd that are here for it all. We thought we’d head down and act well ‘ard in the pit while we had the chance.

Live & Photos: Rob Zombie @ London Brixton Academy – 16 February 2011

February 18th, 2011

Can you believe it’ s been twelve years since Rob Zombie last performed in the UK? Just think in that space of time Machine Head went a bit shit and got good again, nu-metal died and came back, and Gary Glitter got caught being naughty abroad. Songs like ‘Dragula’ and ‘Superbeast’ are now 13 years old. Gosh that makes us feel ancient. With Joey Jordison back behind the kit, we knew this sold-out show was going to be too good to miss.
