You know what, Funeral For A Friend? If you’d waited until next year, you could’ve billed this tour where you’re playing Hours – your magnificent second album – in full as a tenth anniversary celebration of said album. But you didn’t. Oh, okay, we forgive you. But only because we like you so much. Let’s see what that Gavin Lloyd thought about your show at the Camden Underworld last week.

Six things we learned watching Funeral For A Friend in London…

What do get when you mix four Belgians, Milton Keynes tech metallers, some Welwyn Garden City hardcore kids and Devil Sold His Soul? The Metal Hammer 2012 Razor Tour, of course. And while it’s one of the less obvious four-band touring bills around, Tom Dare thought it looked like a good one, so we sent him off to Camden to review it. From which he came back half-blind.

Usually when a someone quits a band, more often than not they do so not on the best of terms with their former bandmates. Obviously there are exceptions to this (after all, sometimes people just want to quit the music business altogether to spend time with their family), but if someone quits to start another band…well…you only have to look at Max Cavalera and Andreas Kisser to see that things do not normally end well in these situations.

Not so Josh Scogin and the guys in Norma Jean though. Not only does Scogin still get on with his former bandmates (well, the handful of them who are in Norma Jean’s current touring line-up), but they get on well enough for Norma Jean to bring The Chariot, the band Scogin quit NJ to form, out on their European tour with them. Awww. Isn’t friendship a wonderful thing?

We’re keeping things nice and simple for this week’s Slaylist. This evening, the 2012 incarnation of Bonecrusher Festival has rolled into town, and we’re heading down to the Camden Underworld to check it out. What better way to get us in the mood than with a Slaylist of all the band’s taking part this year?

Interview: Between The Buried And Me – Tommy Giles Rogers & Paul Waggoner talk The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues EP

October 3rd, 2011

When North Carolina’s prog metal trailblazers, Between The Buried And Me came to London to play two shows at Camden’s Underworld, thought it would be a ruddy great idea to sit down with vocalist, Tommy Giles Rogers and guitarist, Paul Waggoner about their recent EP and their plans for an album.

Can you tell us a bit about the concept behind The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues EP and its sister record that is to follow it?

PW: “The EP starts with a character that’s actually from the last song of The Great Misdirect who has essentially decided to end his life by drifting off to sea. During a state of unconsciousness he starts having these visions of this other character that exists on some other planet, who knows how long ago in a different universe.

Live: Soilent Green + Dripback @ Camden Underworld – 05 May 2011

It’s been over a decade since Soilent Green last performed on these shores and in that time they’ve gone from being a band in their own right to the side-project of a side-project. With Jimmy Bower so busy with Down, Eyehategod haven’t had too much time to tour – meaning that Brian Patton has had even less time for Soilent Green. Not to forget Ben Falgoust keeping busy fronting Goatwhore. We thought we’d go and rock out to Soilent Green while we had the chance…

Live: Enslaved @ London Camden Underworld – 22 April 2011

April 28th, 2011

Having recently won their fourth consecutive Spellemannprisen for last year’s astounding Axioma Ethica Odini, Enslaved have firmly cemented their place at the very top of Norway’s musical exports alongside the likes of Dimmu Borgir, Satyricon and Immortal. We thought we’d head down to the Underworld to celebrate the Bank Holiday weekend in true (tr00/trve) Viking style.

Live: Rotten Sound, Trap Them + Gaza @ London Camden Underworld – 12 April 2011

April 15th, 2011

It’s the hottest grindcore package tour of Spring 2011 so after gobbling some free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, we all traipsed down to the grotty Camden underworld that is… The Underworld. Rotten Sound, Trap Them and Gaza were the ones we really wanted to see so we’ve totally ignored Haust and The Kandidate. Sorry, lads. The other three were bloody good though!
