Lest we forget, Pepper Keenan’s almost defacto appointment post-‘Vote With A Bullet’ to the position of lead vocalist of Corrosion Of Conformity was greeted with a huge collective cheer. And as nice as it’s been to see this CoC line-up play shows, and as nostalgically-pleasing as it was to get an album from them, I don’t think I’m alone in wanting the four-piece CoC to make a return now, am I? Keenan-keening aside, IX doesn’t even nearly scratch that itch, but the highs do handily outweigh the lows of yet another Pepper-free excursion.

by Tomas Doyle

If you turn on the news, you will see an earth crisis: storms, war, remorseless lack of respect for our planet. That is nothing new of course; as a species we’ve been ripping ourselves apart from the inside and buttfucking the environment for as long as we’ve had conscious thought. Similarly, if you head down to your local record store you will see a new album by Earth Crisis.

Album: Ihsahn – Das Seelenbrechen

Whilst the metal press at large was seemingly entranced by Ihsahn’s fourth solo album Eremita, gushing flowery adjectives all over the show and proclaiming it “Album Of The Year” and such, it left some of us a bit cold. Sure, it had some nice songs with some good riffs and all that sort of stuff, but it lacked a certain something, something that’s taken until this latest release to properly place.

Yet more thrash on Thrash Hits? It’s just that there’s quite a lot of it about lately, honestly – we’ll get back to haircare regimes, sandwiches and what a wally Jared Leto is soon enough, don’t worry. Havok are a weird one though, in that so far they’ve actually been really very good indeed at channelling the best of the late 80s thrash scene. Unnatural Selection sees them back off the pace considerably from the frenzied Time Is Up, and that’s a move that should set any old thrasher’s alarms ringing.

Album: Armed for Apocalypse – The Road Will End

Armed for Apocalypse
This Road Will End

by Daniel Cairns

Black Sabbath have released a new album, did you notice? Four old dudes who should have buggered off years ago are clinging on to past glories, because metal heads feel they’re owed some kind of fealty for starting the whole horrid mess in the first place. Plus if there was no Ozzy Osbourne there’d be no Zakk Wylde, so double screw Black Sabbath for that.

It’s a shame, because the fact they won’t piss off now detracts from younger, better and more deserving bands, like Armed for Apocalypse. Armed for Apocalypse are really bringing nasty, grinding sludgy metal forward, not waxing over all nostalgic about the guy that did a reality show with his awful family.

Album: Altar of Plagues – Teethed Glory And Injury

“Impact” is a pleasingly kinetic word to actually say, one of the few that truly feels like the thing it’s trying to describe. The first syllable winds up to the plosive second, giving a real sense of the build and release involved in the whole process. It’s a word that Altar Of Plagues already undersand on multiple levels, with their two previous records landing them directly in the path of huge plaudits and reducing the attendees at their live appearances to stunned, rambling husks. Teethed Glory And Injury already promised to be a significant release for the first half of this year – and then people started to hear bits of it and that first syllable stretched itself to an impossible tension.

Last year’s The One EP earned C.R.O.W.N a debut album release with Candlelight Records, and the French duo continue their formula of doomy stoner-droner with Psychurgy. The album acts as an extension of the EP in every aspect – albeit with a more sophisticated final mix that adds extra atmosphere and even more weight to the low-end crushing passages.

If you’re at all interested in the deathlier end of metal, the name Akercocke should be all-too familiar to you. As one of the UK’s premier bands for the best part of a decade, the sharp-suited Londoners redefined themselves and the boundaries of the genre with each release, merging progressive tendencies and atypical electronica with dizzying velocity and feral savagery to create an enviable body of work. It’s been over five years since their last album, Antichrist, though, and rumours of their demise have hardly been denied by the band. With that background in mind, Voices‘ debut feels bittersweet. As good as it is to know that some of the UK’s finest extreme metal musicians are still working on new ways to disgust and horrify, this latest emission from three of the Akercocke weirdos seems to finally spell the end of their long-silent project.

Album: Vision of Disorder The Cursed Remain Cursed

Oh look. Another reunited band from the 1990s. The difference with this one is that Vision of Disorder have been back for a few years now, their popularity hasn’t had a mysterious retrospective inflation (they’re playing the 500-capacity Underworld in London, Refused played the 2500-capacity Forum) and aren’t one of those bands all of their successors in the hardcore scene name-check in every interview, despite how influential they’ve actually been. Which is daft, because VoD were fucking great first time around, and they’ve come back with an arse-booting record.

Album: Ihsahn – Eremita

Given the seemingly everyday occurrence of yet another band reuniting, it’s perhaps a little surprising that you don’t hear too much clamour for an Emperor reunion. Despite their legendary status, near-perfect back catalogue and (by black metal standards, anyway) popularity, it’s not speculated about or demanded with regularity or vigour. Perhaps it’s because Ihsahn’s solo albums are so bum-clenchingly good, there’s no need for nostalgia – the present’s too good to get misty-eyed about bands past.
