Earache’s recent tendencies to parley with bands of a retrospective focus has now become a major part of their raison d’etre. From the magnificent muddy river blues rock of Rival Sons through to the deft traditional metal leanings of Savage Messiah, this is a label who’ve spearheaded a number of brilliant releases which have firmly had one foot lodged in the past. Amongst all this, Cauldron have carved out a niche for their (self-professed) retro-metal, and have paved their two album route to this point with more than a few nods to Judas Priest, Anvil and Celtic Frost.

2008 into 2009: Gama Bomb

Gama Bomb might well be the best thrashers to come out of Ireland… ever. Joe McGuigan is the self-proclaimed “leader of the futuristic warriors hell-bent on destroying Fightstar.” He is also the bassist of the gumby troupe.

What was your highlight of 2008?
Releasing our ace new tape, Citizen Brain and doing over 60 shows in Europe. Touring with Exodus and shoving petrol-covered rags down the gullet of non-believers.

What’s the worst thing that happened to you in 2008?
Errrm, doing over 60 shows in Europe. Nah, nothing bad has happened to the band – it’s been an amazing year. Me? I think I hit my wee toe off the door last month.

What was your highlight of 2008?
J: Going to the titty breakfast in Montreal after a rad gig with Twisted Tower Dire. The waitresses are completely naked taking your order and serving your food. They seriously brought my food with their snatch in plain view – it was awesome! I wore my sunglasses so I could really get my money’s worth!
