Triptykon’s unique sound was born from the dying days of Celtic Frost, when frontman Tom G. Warrior (aka Thomas Gabriel Fischer) staked his everlasting claim for the darkness with Frost’s final outing, 2006’s much maligned (at the time) Monotheist. When Fischer resurfaced in 2010 with Triptykon’s debut, Eparistera Daimones, he continued to lie in those same shadows with a singular doomed sound that clearly showed that Celtic Frost’s swansong was a little more in his realm than it was of his former bandmates.

It’s been a rough couple of years for black metal albums. A few major bands have fluffed their lines, a few others have been away from the studio, and the relentless mediocrity of far too much of the rest has only been briefly punctuated by the genuine class of Altar Of Plagues, God Seed and a couple of others. But hopes are high for 2013, with promising releases on the horizon. Are Lightning Swords Of Death back to kick things off with a bang? Well… no. They’re a symptom of exactly why the last two years have been a bit poo.

20 Years Of Black Metal Evolution – Part #1

February 27th, 2012

Darkthrone Fenriz promo photo Thrash Hits

With Sunday just past marking the 20th anniversary of the release of Darkthrone’s A Blaze In The Northern Sky (and therefore being pretty much the closest thing to a birthday that black metal can claim to have), over the coming week we’re letting Tom Dare off the leash to run his mouth about one of metal’s most controversial off-shoots. But instead of rehashing the same-old same-old tales from the genre’s torrid history, we thought we’d get him to look at how the genre’s evolved since those first, frosty releases two decades ago. Take it away, Mr. Dare…

Evile’s rise to the top of the so-called “thrash revival” has been well charted by now, and you don’t need us to tell you about how Huddersfield’s finest have rapidly become a dearly loved figure within British metal. But thrash’s new wave has its detractors as well – we’ve all got plenty of Slayer and Exodus records by now, and accusations that some of the latest clutch of shredders haven’t necessarily done much that’s genuinely new or distinct have some merit, including some from right here. Have Evile finally managed to record an album to shut those dissenting voices up?

Even geniuses make mistakes. Even guitar gods occasionally fluff a riff. Even musicians as accomplished and influential as Tom G Warrior will release weak records (Cold Lake, anyone?).  With this year’s Eparistera Daimones a towering masterpiece of darkness and misery, when we heard an EP was in the works within months, we worried that it would simply be the off-cuts that didn’t make the grade. But when the grade is set by Eparistera Daimones, the off-cuts can end up being tastier than most bands’ prime fillets.

A series of prolonged torturous screams opens and sets the tone Revelations of the Black Flame, the latest opus from Oslo-based black metallers, 1349. Never a band to give fans an easy ride, the Norwegians long-awaited fifth studio album stays tr00 to their black metal purist roots, but manages to give them a malevolent twist.
