Earlier this week, the folks over in charge of Tech-Fest 2013 made their first line-up announcement – and they weren’t messing about. 25 bands, including all three major headline acts, were all covered in the first batch of names. That’s the kind of festival announcement we can get behind, and the kind that we’re making the subject of this week’s Sunday Spotify Slaylist.

It’s time for another Thrash Hits festival splash page – and this time it’s for Hammerfest. All of our Hammerfest 2013 coverage from the weekend will be linked to on this here post, so make sure you bookmark it as it’s all you’re going to need. Yep. That means individual band coverage (photos, setlists and maybe even some reviews), all the dodgy rumours and awful gossip our man David Keevill overhears, and every single photo of Wales-based debauchery that Gary Wolstenholme and Jenn McCambridge snap will be here.

While we get a lot of funny things sent to us in the mail, we get a Hell of a lot stranger things sent to us by email. This column by Adam ‘Swanny’ Swan, bassist of Brit-djentsters, Monuments, on the disaffection of British music youth in the face of mass media music and tired, predictable 4/4 beats, is definitely one of the latter. That’s him second from the left up above. Yeah, him with the dreadlocks. The boy’s certainly got a lot on his mind….

British indy label Basick Records put on their own night in London, featuring instrumental tech metal(/cheese) one-piece Chimp Spanner (yes, he did bring a backing band), excellent French atmospheric tech metallers Uneven Structure and French mentalist The Algorithm. We went along to bang our heads in 17/8 time signature.
Six things we learned from when Basick Records brought their bands to London

Uh oh. A band with a massive online following got a new vocalist. It’s ok though because we love TesseracT and love conquers all. Right? Maybe. Ooh err… Either way, we popped down to the opening night of the Lowering The Tone tour in London to tap our feet in 7/8. It’s really difficult.

Prog metal supremos, TesseracT have announced their first ever headline tour of the UK this September and they’ll be taking prog metallers, Chimp Spanner and prog metallers, Uneven Structure on tour with them. Did someone say “prog metal”? Oh.

There are some really cool record labels around so we thought we’d start talking about and talking to a few of them. Seeing as Basick Records are celebrating their 5th birthday this weekend with a free gig in Luton, we decided to talk to label boss and general awesome guy, Nathan “Barley” Phillips. In return, he sent us a naked photo of himself…

Chimp Spanner isn’t a band – it’s a single man, very much in the Nine Inch Nails = Trent Reznor kind of way. The man in question is one Paul Antonio Ortiz: playing every part on the album, recording every note, applying the polish and recently forming a live band (featuring members of Fellsilent) to tour the record, Chimp Spanner is very much a one-stop shop when it comes to technical virtuoso instrumentalism.
