When 3 released their last album, 2007’s The End Has Begun, it seemed like they had the world at their feet. It crunched and grooved, winning the New York band golden support slots with fellow prog-rockers Porcupine Tree and Dream Theater amongst others.

Progressive Nation Interview: Fredrik Akesson of Opeth on being in Opeth, not Dream Theater

October 22nd, 2009

With Swedish metallers Opeth recently touring with prog overlords Dream Theater, Chris Cope caught up with axeman Fredrik Akesson to talk about his role in the band and why Scandinavia creates so many big, bad metalheads.

Opeth

It’s nearly show-time at the final UK show of the tour, and we’re enlisted with the task of taking the burly, hairy man out of his cosy dressing room for a chat. Thankfully Fredrik doesn’t mind standing about in the cold wasteland of boxes and gear behind the stage. It’s extremely dark. Hope he doesn’t bite…

Progressive Nation Interview: Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater on Prog, Portnoy and iPhones

October 21st, 2009

When progressive metal godfathers Dream Theater landed in Glasgow to wow the wits out of far-from-innocent people with 113/19 time signatures, Chris Cope sat down for a quick chinwag with keyboard wizard Jordan Rudess

In a few hours he’ll be onstage, headlining the Glasgow SECC, but just now Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess is pretending to be a normal human being and lounging in a hotel bar. There’s a red carpet outside, but that’s for the Indian wedding guests congregating behind us, not for Jordan, or indeed Thrash Hits. The cheek.

Scotland is renowned for producing many fine things, but metal bands certainly aint one of them. Sure, Biffy Clyro flirted with it in their pre-stadia days, and the chaps in Mendeed briefly threatened to impact the UK rock landscape before meekly disbanding with all but a whimper. Next up to try and tartan-ify our ears are Flood Of Red, a six strong group from up near Glasgow.

It seems these days you can chuck melodic onto anything and you’ll get a resplendent new genre to wrap your ears around. Melodic death metal was one of the first to bridge the whole melodic thing with its respective sound and it has stood up to the proverbial test of time. Insomnium are fine purveyors of this aural battery/massage [delete as applicable], with the Finnish metal lords having been on the scene since the late 90s.

Live & Photos: Mastodon @ Glasgow ABC – 07 June 2009

June 11th, 2009

Before embarking upon a range of dates upon the European mainland, Mastodon popped over to the UK for a mini-tour of smaller venues. Chris Cope was there in Glasgow to watch a Crack The Skye extravaganza

This is loud stuff. Reaching Motorhead-esque volume levels, Mastodon seem to have laced their guitar leads with dynamite, and after a couple of songs in, the crowd’s ears are both pricking excitedly but also curling over to try and protect themselves from impending deafness.

But hey, that’s what it’s all about isn’t it?

In days of fickle audiences and record labels who are increasingly likely to hawk up and spit out bands, reaching the ten album milestone is a feat to be celebrated. Three cheers then for Zao, with the prolific American metallers releasing their tenth LP, Awake?.

This latest effort from metalcore troupe, The Devil Wears Prada, debuted in the US charts at number 11, and it’s a little pondersome as to why. Maybe some of the more naïve members of the public picked up a copy thinking it was Anne Hathaway singing about her film, shoes and frilly frocks, but who knows?
