On paper, Flyleaf are a massive success. The Texans have owned huge swathes of the American charts for years, and toured with some of your favorite bands. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why – their formula is a surefire winner. Imagine if Nickelback matador Chad Kroeger impregnated Avril Levigne multiple times, and Avril then gave birth to an angry Brady Bunch. It’s this formidable blueprint the has carried Flyleaf all the way to album number three – New Horizons.

As I Lay Dying
Metal Blade

by David Keevill

As I Lay Dying have consistently trodden water on the edges of higher acclaim. Whilst they have shown a technical proficiency undoubtedly born, at least in part, from frontman Tim Lambesis’ instrumental polygamy, the music has always lacked innovation and heart. In short: AILD is a band whose potential has never quite been reflected in their studio output.

Viking Metal and Christianity: A Most Misunderstood Relationship

March 8th, 2012

Amon Amarth Viking Metal Thrash Hits

David Keevill studied Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic at Cambridge. That means he knows his stuff when it comes to actual, really-real Vikings. Since both we and he are pedantic sorts, we browbeat him into writing an explanation as to on why anti-Christian imagery in Viking Metal is a horrible anachronism. Yeah, serious intellectual stuff! Bet you weren’t expecting that on Thrash Hits, right?

I’m not sure how I’d feel if I was in As I Lay Dying. Would I be proud to be in a band which helped ignite the metalcore scene into the omnipresent behemoth that it is today? Or would I be pissed off that there are now literally thousands of bands pursuing a similar sound from all four corners of MySpace?

This latest effort from metalcore troupe, The Devil Wears Prada, debuted in the US charts at number 11, and it’s a little pondersome as to why. Maybe some of the more naïve members of the public picked up a copy thinking it was Anne Hathaway singing about her film, shoes and frilly frocks, but who knows?

Interview: Oceano – “Theres always SOMETHING to be pissed about!”

April 6th, 2009

Ahead of the release of their debut album, Depths, we caught up with Chicago death metallers Oceano. Frontman Adam Warren to discuss just how angry they are, the pitfalls of brutalising hot women and their favourite bit of a cow…

Depths is a pretty angry record and you’ve described yourself as an angry band. What has pissed you off so much?
“We’re pissed off about alot of things, albeit the hiccups and burdens we experience in life all the way down to the wrongs in society and just how inherently fucked up this world can be.”
