There is no doubt that Skindred are one of the most exciting live acts the UK has produced in the past decade. Even your most purist, elitist and holier-than-thou of metalheads would struggle to fault their consistently explosive stage performances. That said, whilst it’s commonplace for most bands to sound better live than on record – the incongruity is at its most severe with Skindred. The three albums that precede Union Black have showcased how innovative this Welsh quartet can be, though never quite captured the absolute intensity of what they are capable of. After years of touring and proving their worth to the masses, will this be the record that does them justice?

My Chemical Romance return with Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. We heard it, watched it, reviewed it

October 29th, 2010

We were at London Hammersmith Apollo last weekend to watch My Chemical Romance play an intimate show to 5,000 screaming girls. The main intention was to hear MCR play some new songs, which they did. They played four of them.

In a 22-song set, four new tracks is perfectly reasonable, especially as they walked onstage in their new Varsity-inspired look (which is sure to revitalise sales at American Apparel over the coming months) to sing ‘Na Na Na’. Retro ice hockey shirts FTW, etc etc.

This month sees the release of yet another eponymous offering from Canadian punk rock outfit Billy Talent. No seriously, they’re still going. That band from college with the guy who’s got a bit of a weird voice and songs that all sound pretty much the same? Yeah, the ones you pretended not to like but secretly did. Them.

Remember that pair of trainers you bought years ago? The ones that you’ve worn irrespective of the occasion, the weather and the ever -fickle finger of fashion? The ones that just feel so comfortable when you slip them on that it doesn’t really matter that they’re a little past their prime? Killswitch Engage are those trainers – in a metaphorical sense at least.

Few artists nowadays release enough material for five albums, even fewer release enough for five albums in six years while working on multiple side-projects – Omar Rodriguez-Lopez has so many fingers in so many pies we think he’s got a couple of spare arms hidden away somewhere, would also explain his enviable propensity to be outrageously good on the guitar.

The Mars Volta’s Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez are two such artists. The brains behind the sorely missed, hugely influential late 1990’s post-hardcore of At The Drive-In, they left to form prog outfit The Mars Volta in 2001 and have since gone on to produce some of the most awe-inspiring, enthusing and simultaneously impenetrable, self-indulgent music in existence.

Interview: Madina Lake’s Nathan Leone – “Attics to Eden refers to the different ways to look at things to bring you happiness.”

March 24th, 2009

With the release their second album, Attics To Eden, drawing ever closer, we caught up with Madina Lake singer, Nathan Leone to talk about the new record, his twin brother shitting himself and getting beaten up by girls.

Attics To Eden is the second in the set of three in the concept. How is it going so far?
“It was a brutal few months in our rehearsal spot in Chicago. We had poster boards with scribbling and arrows all over the walls trying to assure it all made sense. Music always comes first though and then we weave the storyline around it so as not to influence the honesty of the lyrics. We’ve got the ending all set and will probably start the third in a few months when we’ve decompressed.”

Trivium are giving away a free MP3 of ‘Kirisute Gomen’ at 5am GMT Thursday, 31 July 2008 from all Roadrunner and Trivium websites for 24 hours.

The opening track from their forthcoming fourth album, Shogun keeps on the Japanese theme by referring to the executuon privileges of a Samurai warrior. Have they been watching a bit of Heroes? Here’s the artwork anyway.
