A psychologist could probably draw all sorts of conclusions from the fact that when Gregor Mackintosh, one of Britain’s most prominent doom mongers, looked for a way to channel his grief at his father’s passing, he chose raw and brutal death metal. Three years on from the somewhat sad inception of Vallenfyre, Mackintosh and his group of hyper-talented friends are back once again to explore both loss and grief, via Mackintosh’s own musical heritage from the 80s.

Darkthrone
The Underground Resistance

In a funny way, you have to feel sorry for Darkthrone. Every time they’ve done something different, avoid what’s cool and flip humanity the finger, whatever they’ve done has, sooner or later, become trendy in metal circles. Unluckily for Darkthrone, ’80s speed metal and crust have both made a comeback. Everyone who spat their dummy out over The Cult Is Alive and F.O.A.D. incorporating both is now falling over themself to praise The Underground Resistance. So is this just hipster froth (well… some of it is, but is all of it?) or is album fifteen genuinely one of the Norwegians’ better moments? [Read more →]

Top 6: Most Necro Song Titles Of 2012 So Far

June 20th, 2012

Cannibal Corpse 2012 promo photo Thrash Hits

With extreme metal having a bit of a blinding year so far, we thought this would give us the perfect opportunity/excuse to celebrate/poke fun at some of the most mortally offensive, blasphemous, gory, violent, sadistic and generally nasty song titles 2012 has thrown up. It also gives us a chance to put together one of our thoroughly researched, essential Top 6s. There’s probably a load of nasty shit we’ve missed or that’s not around yet, so leave any suggestions down the bottom and we’ll do another one come the end of the year with any we overlooked. And yes, of course Cannibal Corpse made it into the list.

Brief Guide On How To Make Black Metal In 2012:

1) Pick your basic influence. This should be a Scandinavian band active in the early 1990s or Bathory.
2) Decide whether to A) simply rip off said band or B) do something new. If A), you’re done. If B), move on to number 3.
3) Liberally draw inspiration from a French black metal band.
4) Add in one or more of the following elements to make yourself immediately distinct: post-rock, doom, crusty hardcore, prog, Neurosis, noise, electronica, instruments/melodies/rhythms distinct to your country of origin

It’s a recipe that’s served Mutilation Rites very well on their debut album Empyrean.

Noisey Steve Ignorant Crass YouTube Thrash Hits

Another day, another YouTube channel demanding your attention, right? Well, no, in this case – Noisey, the Vice Magazine online-offshoot that’s entirely music-orientated – launched their own YouTube channel this week, and it’s already got a hell of a lot more going for it than a million other YouTube music channels where people endlessly interview rock stars about any old nonsense they thought up in the five minutes before they switched their camera on.

What? What? Is it “Crap Fucking Album” week or something? Are people starting to take the piss because it’s getting towards the end of the year or something? That’s got to be the reason why I’ve been given Bakteria‘s album’s worth of puerile dick-joke thrash to review.
