I’ll say this for Electric Wizard, at least they haven’t tried to ‘go political’ or anything. Bless them, they’re still obsessed with killing, weed, Satan, witches, Lovecraft, weed and more killing, which is great. They’re in their, what… 40s now? And they haven’t grown up at all. There’s no better band in the world when it comes to all this stuff, and Time To Die is full of it.

Top 6: Songs by Amen (now they’re not playing any UK shows)

August 5th, 2014

Amen 2014 promo photo B Thrash Hits

The return of Amen was big news to anyone that was an oily, depressed teenager at the turn of the century. To anyone that had just started listening to Bill Hicks and was getting aimlessly angry at everything from politics to their cat, Casey Chaos was like a sweary Jesus.

However, Amen’s proposed UK comeback tour is now dead. First a whole brace of shows were postponed so the band could continue to work on their (long, long, long) delayed new album. The subsequent implosion of Alt-Fest – of which Amen’s booking for was what sparked this tour in the first place – saw the rest of the shows get pulled as well. With certain members of the Thrash Hits team sobbing angry, nostalgic tears as we email off our ticket refund requests, we got Amen superfan Daniel Cairns to run off a little list for us…

The Top 6 Amen songs we’re not going to see played live this month anymore

In the years between Eyehategod’s last release in 2000 and their new self-titled album, we’ve seen the rise and fall of nu metal, two new US Presidents, three new Prime Ministers, Gangnam Style, Harlem Shake and a Partridge film in a pear tree…

And Eyehategod still sound like Eyehategod, and it’s brilliant.

Remember MTV2? It used to be pretty good back in the day. Of course like most things, it rapidly went downhill and started playing the same Bowling for Soup and Sum 41 songs, but it used to be a cool place to find out about new music before the internet came along and took all the effort out of everything. Imagine finding out about a new band from the telly? Imagine telling some youth about those halcyon days, while you bounce them on your knee, sucking away on a Werther’s Original while they ignore you, their head buried in their iPad looking up gonzo happyslap violence-porn or whatever.

Album: Armed for Apocalypse – The Road Will End

Black Sabbath have released a new album, did you notice? Four old dudes who should have buggered off years ago are clinging on to past glories, because metal heads feel they’re owed some kind of fealty for starting the whole horrid mess in the first place. Plus if there was no Ozzy Osbourne there’d be no Zakk Wylde, so double screw Black Sabbath for that.

It’s a shame, because the fact they won’t piss off now detracts from younger, better and more deserving bands, like Armed for Apocalypse. Armed for Apocalypse are really bringing nasty, grinding sludgy metal forward, not waxing over all nostalgic about the guy that did a reality show with his awful family.

Portal

Profound Lore

Allow me to get personal for a minute. As well as writing about dumbbell heavy metal, I write about computer games occasionally. Naturally this means I am followed by computer game people as well as heavy metal people on twitter (as you can imagine there’s a lot of crossover between the two). Whenever I talk about Portal (the band), computer games people think I am talking about the computer game of the same name, so being the colossal prick I am, I like to write innocuous tweets saying “New song from Portal”. Games types will click on the link, expecting a load of bleepy bloopy, quirky electronic buggery bollocks, but instead get an onslaught of atonal, stupidly violent death metal, with a singer that used to wear a cuckoo clock on his head. The amount of “aaaargh what the hell is this?” replies have made this childish and incredibly pointless endeavour entirely worth it.

Album: Tomahawk – Oddfellows

Tomahawk
Oddfellows
Ipecac Recordings
28 January 2013

by Daniel Cairns

Mike Patton could record himself belching into a dictaphone and stick some reverb on it and fans would still clamour over it, such is the frenzy the man causes. Oddfellows isn’t like that though, thankfully, or unfortunately (depending on how broken you are). Out of the gazillion projects he’s  shrieked and gurgled on, Tomahawk is the one most likely to appeal to your average Faith No More listening gumby, being as they are, a relatively straightforward rock band, although they’d still make a litany of Foo Fighters fans feel dumber than they already are.
