Everyone knows what makes(made?) Megadeth awesome, and after a career spanning 30 years you’d think Dave Mustaine would know how to put down a great album based around these strengths. However, MegaDave’s 14th album, Super Collider – released on his own label after parting with Roadrunner Records – is at best a painfully boring hard rock record, and at worst an altogether embarrassing experience.

MEGADAVE. We’ll never get tired of calling Dave Mustaine that. No matter how many stupid things he says off stage, no matter how many awful new Megadeth albums called Super Collider that he puts out, and no matter how many onstage temper tantrums he throws because he’s unhappy with the stage lighting, no matter how many homophobic slurs he wants to throw at people who’ve paid money to go watch him play live – despite all of that, he’ll still always be MegaDave.

The Thrash Hits Podcast 018: The Racist, Sexist, Homophobic Underbelly of Metal

November 15th, 2012

Thrash Hits Podcast 1

Uh-oh – we’re dealing with some Serious Stuff on this episode of the podcast. This week, Hugh is joined by Tom Doyle as they take a look at the unpleasant creeping tolerance for casual racism, sexism, homophobia and hate that has creeped into the fandom of modern metal, rock, and punk, and also at significant sections of the community’s unwillingness to recognise or address it in a meaningful way. Yeah, it’s not for the faint-hearted.

The Thrash Hits Podcast 010: Bloodstock Open Air 2012 REVIEWED

August 20th, 2012

Thrash Hits Podcast 1

With Bloodstock Open Air 2012 now over, Hugh Platt and Tom Dare have reconvened in the studio to look back at the highs and lows of Thrash Hits’ Bloodstock experience this year – talking about our high and lows, the winners and losers, and just what Tom was doing with a Hairy Helmet and an Old Growler on the Friday night.

We also took time out to see what nonsense MegaDave has been spouting this week, to discuss Peter Dolving’s revelations about what really went on with his split from The Haunted earlier this year, as well as a check-up on the situation with Baroness, who suffered a truly awful bus crash last week. Get well soon, guys.

EP: Metallica – Beyond Magnetic

If we follow the chronology of that famous T-shirt, we appear to currently be in the “death” phase of Metallica’s career. I recently took to these very pages to explain why Lulu was not the worst album of 2011 but that should not be taken as a defence – the record was an unmitigated disaster and will surely be looked back on in years to come as real emperor’s new clothes moment of folly from the yes-men who now surround the biggest heavy band ever. But in truth Metallica fans haven’t had a lot to shout about for a long time now. St Anger‘s problems were well-documented, and it said a lot about the sorry state of affairs that the band were in that Death Magnetic – an LP which was average by any standard let alone when compared to the bands monolithic back catalogue – was met with a “this isn’t THAT bad” pat on the head from fans and critics.

It’s only been two years since Megadeth unleashed Endgame and despite the hectic tour schedule over that time, they are back with their thirteenth studio album TH1RT3EN. This is the final release in their current recording contract with Roadrunner Records, and various interviews with Dave Mustaine would indicate it is quite likely to be their last. Following the glowing response that met its predecessor and all the extra exposure generated from the Big Four shows, it would be fair to say the pressure is on and expectations are high.
