If we follow the chronology of that famous T-shirt, we appear to currently be in the “death” phase of Metallica’s career. I recently took to these very pages to explain why Lulu was not the worst album of 2011 but that should not be taken as a defence – the record was an unmitigated disaster and will surely be looked back on in years to come as real emperor’s new clothes moment of folly from the yes-men who now surround the biggest heavy band ever. But in truth Metallica fans haven’t had a lot to shout about for a long time now. St Anger‘s problems were well-documented, and it said a lot about the sorry state of affairs that the band were in that Death Magnetic – an LP which was average by any standard let alone when compared to the bands monolithic back catalogue – was met with a “this isn’t THAT bad” pat on the head from fans and critics.

The only Grammys that count

Mars Volta Thrash Hits promo

In the midst of all these festival announcements, there’s been a little old thing called The Grammys taking place in the US of A. And unlike the rubbish mainstream music awards over here in Blighty, where heavy metal’s only nod comes from cursory nominations for Iron Maiden and AC/DC, the Americans aren’t ashamed to have awards for rock and heavy metal alongside all that pop music malarky.

Which is why it’s such a shame that they’ve balls’d it up so royally this year.

2008 into 2009: Misery Signals

December 21st, 2008

Ultra-technical hardcore troupe, Misery Signals released their third album in 2008. We spoke to Stuart Ross about playing guitar and headbanging with the Milwaukee natives whilst planning a trip to Fuck City for New Year’s.

What was your highlight of 2008?
My personal highlight of 2008 was the Through The Noise tour with Misery Signals, Comeback Kid, Bane, Shai Hulud, Outbreak and Grave Maker. It was such a great time having a handful of some of my favourite bands all on one tour. Every night was a party.

What’s the worst thing that happened to you in 2008?
Nothing really. haha, I had pretty good luck this year (knock on wood). I’m bummed I missed the Hot Water Music reunion show in Chicago.

2008 into 2009: Malefice

December 8th, 2008

Malefice are one of British heavy metal’s great hopes for the next few years. Basically, they’re dead good, bloody love their metal (especially the Download Festival part of it) and vocalist Dale Butler, does not like Kid Rock.

What was your highlight of 2008?
Playing Download 2008, dude. Literally lived a dream that day. Thank you to all the people that came out early and bled for us! It was insane!

What’s the worst thing that happened to you in 2008?
Probably crashing our van on tour in September. It wasn’t that bad – nobody was hurt – but it kept us off the road for four days. Bear in mind we had been in the studio recording the new album for about three to four months, so we were eager to be out playing. It sucked.

How much idle conjecture has there been over Chinese Democracy? Axl Rose has had 17 years to turn this vanity project into absolute gold. It has to be a masterpiece. It has to be the best album of the 21st century.

I say “vanity project” because Rose is the only founding member remaining in Guns N’ Roses. I say “vanity project” because he has taken 17 bloody years to write one album!
