It was a Deathwish, Inc double-header the other week when Touché Amoré and Self Defense Family came to town. Well, it was a triple-header if you count Touché Amoré-side project Dad Punchers, who opened the show. Luckily our man Alex Andrews is in to this stuff, so for him it was like getting an extra slice of fried bread with a fry-up.

6 things we learnt watching Touché Amoré in Camden:

It’s been over two years since Touché Amoré released Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me; two years is a long time for a band that spends most of their life in the back of a van, sustaining themselves with part-time jobs and sporadically-released seven-inches. In that time, we’ve seen some of Touché Amoré’s brother and sister bands explore headier, more melodic directions (Title Fight), continue in much of the same fashion (Defeater), or gone on hiatus (Tigers Jaw).

Do you ever get the feeling that you’re being made fun of? That unease where some obnoxious prick knows something that you don’t and you don’t really know what to do because you’re not sure. They’re being too subtle, but you know it’s not quite right – it’s too unfamiliar. You don’t know quite how to fight back because you know that if you say the wrong thing, they’ll just laugh at you.

Those obnoxious pricks are Deafheaven. Their weapon of torment is Sunbather. It’s bloody great.

Despite existing as a band for nearly 25 years, Converge rarely – if ever – disappoint. They’ve managed to become increasingly relevant; whereas most bands fade further into obscurity with age, maybe breaking up once, twice, or seven times, only to reunite and play whichever back album marked their careers.

June 1st, 2012

Another day; another shedload of FREE MUSIC for you to download. Today it’s the turn of Deathwish, Inc., the label co-founded by Converge’s Jacob Bannon, as they’ve just released a free “Summer 2012” label sampler. When you take a look at the tracklisting – featuring the likes of Narrows, Oathbreaker, Heiress, Whips/Chains, Rise And Fall, Give Up The Ghost (aka American Nightmare), Single Mothers, Self Defense Family, Cursed, Touché Amoré, and Deafheaven – you can see that this is no piddly compilation of also-rans and lightweights.

Interview: Jeremy Bolm of Touché Amoré on oversharing, Leonard Cohen, and whether Ryan Gosling really was at that American Nightmare show or not.

March 15th, 2012

When Touché Amoré tore up London at the end of last month, Alex Andrews caught up with Jeremy Bolm to talk about the anxiety that comes with playing bigger venues and supporting a reformed American Nightmare

Jeremy Bolm sits perched on a sofa, devouring what’s left of a sauce-covered chicken leg. Having only been introduced to Nando’s the day before by the boys in Basement, the Touché Amoré frontman appears as fascinated with the restaurant as the flocks of professional footballers and celebrities who ironically dine there.

Shovelling chips into his mouth, Bolm talks excitedly about opening up a franchise in Los Angeles. Softly-spoken and remarkably friendly, it takes a moment to get your head ahead around the fact that this is the same man who pens such intensely tortured verses and will later perform front flips off the cramped stage of the Camden Barfly.

Touché Amoré at the Camden Barfly c/o Ben Gibson 27 February 2012 Thrash Hits

There are a lot of things that are good about Touché Amoré. One of the good things about Touché Amoré is that they force lazy music bloggers to learn the keyboard-shortcut for typing “é”. Another, perhaps more relevant, good thing about Touché Amoré, is that they are a bloody awesome live band. That’s why we had Ben Gibson go and photograph them doing just that at the Camden Barfly earlier this week, at any rate.

Album: Narrows – Painted

Whilst there has been much written about the Mayan prediction of the destruction of the world this year, there has be relatively little discussion about what the soundtrack to that impending apocalypse will be. Well, I humbly submit that with their second full-length, Painted, Narrows have produced a record that would amply accompany any armageddon that our central-American predecessors may have called on. That’s not because it is the heaviest album you will this year, nor is it the nastiest or even the most gruellingly dissonant (though it does score highly in all these categories) – but rather because of its remorseless, unrelenting, soul emptying bleakness which refuses to abate throughout the eight tracks on offer here.
