The future of British rock and metal festivals

April 1st, 2014

With Black Sabbath, Soundgarden, Faith No More, Motörhead and Soulfly (and Wolfmother…) set to fill the main stage of a day at British Summer Time festival in Hyde Park this July, it struck Raziq Rauf that the same bill could easily have been announced in 2000 to the same fanfare. What has (or has not) happened in the last 14 years for this to be the case and what does the future have in store?

What is the future of music festivals? I’m not talking 2015 (because 2014’s summer season lineup is just about fully lined up), I’m talking about something more like 2025. What is going to happen to our music festivals in the next ten years? Will Metallica still be headlining on a rota with Slipknot, Iron Maiden and Linkin Park? The classic rockers like Aerosmith, Def Leppard and Black Sabbath have a shelf-life. Are Avenged Sevenfold or Rammstein the answer? While they sell out arenas in London and that simply translates to headlining Donington or Knebworth, neither have ever had quite the same impact as those first mentioned few and they likely never will.

Thrash Hits’ Favourite Gigs of 2013

December 12th, 2013

2013 thrash hits favourite gigs of the year

Part and parcel of being opinionated music lovers is that we go and experience lots of music in its natural habitat – on a stage – and then we decide how good it was. Some spectacles are so powerful that they evoke emotions strong enough to form memories through the drunkenness. It’s a rarity but that’s why some here have to name several before deciding upon their Favourite Gig of 2013. There is zero reason for you to be reading this but if you’ve read this far, you’ll get at least halfway down before clicking the cross.

This is the first time Def Leppard have played Hysteria in its entirety. Yes, they did it eleven times at The Joint in the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel, but it’s one of the greatest rock albums of all time and so it’s absolutely necessary for it to be documented like this. Just like this.

Welsh chart-botherers, Lostprophets, are back once more. We know you love to mock them, people of the Internet, but we also know you know all the words to ‘Shinobi vs. Dragon Ninja’ and ‘Rooftops’. You can try and deny it, but we know the truth. The question is, will you be singing along to the lead singles from Weapons in a year’s time as well, and still trying to deny it? [Read more →]

Where is Def Leppard? Where is Mötley Crüe? When Steel Panther asked these questions in their debut single ‘Death To All But Metal’ – little would they have known that a few years later, they would actually be on tour with them. We managed to find our leopard print trousers and guy-liner in time to race over to Wembley for the ultimate hair metal night out.

Six things we found out when we went to see Def Leppard at Wembley:

Despite all the rumours about The Darkness being set to reunite to be second on the bill to Def Leppard at Download Festival 2011, festival booker Andy Copping has said that they won’t be. We may have been totally right about Leppard headlining but we still live in hope.

It’s interesting that when the same rumours circulated last summer, Justin Hawkins popped his head out to tell everyone it wasn’t true. He hasn’t done that this year. Hmmm. We still want The Darkness to return.

Who do you want the final Download Festival 2011 headliner to be?

Sometimes people like to whisper in our ears and sometimes we are just better at the internet than other people. This all leads to us hearing about stuff way before we’re meant to. That’s how we got the scoops on Metallica and Linkin Park headlining Sonisphere Festival 2009 as well as when AC/DC self-confirmed Download Festival 2010.

This time, a little whisper found its way into our stupid heads about Def Leppard and The Darkness co-headlining Download Festival 2011. There’s a tiny little more to it than just a silly rumour though. It just depends on how hard you look…
