On Defeater’s third full-length Letters Home, their conceptual story arc about an exceptionally dysfunctional wartime family continues. Previous albums have told the story of a brother each, and this record imparts tales of the violent patriarch’s earlier life. However, the band have clearly not learned from George Lucas’ mistakes, as adding preceding events to canon does not make for particularly riveting storytelling.

Every Time I Die are one of my favourite bands in the world. They encapsulate everything that is good about heavy music. Riffs, melody, excellent merch. I wouldn’t own six ETID tshirts otherwise.

Is that excessive? No – they’re all awesome shirts. Is this going to be a balanced, honest review? It’s the only way. Was I drunk? No – it was the first time sober at an ETID show and I was scared. Especially when I nipped out for a cigarette and had to bustle my way past half a dozen handbags (after they’d hit me in the belly, of course) and then the very ample smoking area was full. What was this madness? So many women. So much cancer. Every Time I Die!

“Honesty is the best policy.” If ever there was a man to live that very sentiment, it’s La Dispute’s Jordan Dreyer. Yet almost as soon as he makes his entrance, Dreyer derails his train of thought to make an excuse for his idiosyncratic openness. “Not sure why I’m even writing this,” he confesses. “But I guess it feels right. It sort of feels like I have to – like an exorcism.” Even without the images of spinning heads and projectile vomiting that the ‘e’ word conjures, you probably get the idea that Wildlife isn’t exactly one to be filed under ‘easy listening.’ [Read more →]
