Metal Hammer’s annual Defenders of the Faith tour is usually a bloody good excuse to catch a whole crop of excellent bands all in one place – this year’s line-up was particularly impressive, with headliners Amon Amarth being backed up by the likes of Carcass, Hell, and Bleed From Within. We got our principal photographer, Mr Gary Wolstenholme, to head on down to Manchester to catch one of the last big metal tours of 2013 do its dirty business all over the O2 Academy.

We love a bit of metal so we went down to Brixton Academy to see Trivium headline Metal Hammer’s Defenders of the Faith tour with In Flames, Ghost and Rise To Remain in tow. Insense played as well but they played really, really early and Gary didn’t even manage to take photos of them up in Manchester. There are loads of photos. Go click on them and then go visit Gary’s website because he’s awesome.
Six things we figured out whilst watching all the metal in Brixton:
Photos + Live: Lamb of God, Dimmu Borgir, Unearth & Five Finger Death Punch @ London Brixton Academy – 14 February 2009

There’s a lot we could say about the Defenders of the Faith show in Brixton. We could mention Five Finger Death Punch’s use of nu-metal poses to start a mosh pit before 7pm. Or how Unearth rattle through more chest-thumping riffs in a 30 minute set than some bands do in their entire careers. Or maybe how Dimmu Borgir should really start crediting their smoke machine as the seventh member of the band. But really, Sunday night in Brixton was all about one band – Lamb of God.

Since we got our dirty mitts on Lamb Of God’s fifth album, Wrath over the New Year, it has barely left our tinny laptop speakers.
All the pre-release chatter from the band has been the stock, “It’s our bestest album EVA!!1!” type stuff but our favourite bit was when guitarist Chris Adler said, “Wrath needs no hype,” during an interview performed with the express reason of hyping the record. Uh huh.
He’s right though. [Read more →]

We can’t stress how immense this tour is going to be. If Lamb Of God’s new album, Wrath isn’t the best album of 2009, we’re predicting a bloody amazing year!

Is nu-metal making a comeback? Well, if the 250,000 copies of Five Finger Death Punch’s debut album that America bought this year are anything to go by, then it’s certainly giving it a go. We caught up with Hungary-born guitarist, Zoltan Bathory, and found out just how much damage you can do to your bandmates with a paintball gun…
What was your highlight of 2008?
The Rockstar Mayhem Festival http://www.mayhemfest.com/ was all-metal, which for the US is pretty awesome. Having almost 10,000 people in front of the stage for 3 months, that was pretty amazing for us.

Mighty metallers Lamb Of God will release their fifth album, entitled Wrath on 23 February 2009 through Roadrunner Records in the UK and on 24 February 2009 through Epic in the USA.
The Virginia troupe took most of 2008 to record Wrath with producer Josh Wilbur. We have been assured that it is quite good. As if we thought it could be anything but amazing.
