Hands up! How many of you Dillinger Escape Plan aficionados realised that, eighteen months prior to his discreet tip-toe out of the fold, guitarist Jeff Tuttle was fronting another band? Yes, they even released a self-titled EP in 2011 which largely went unnoticed to pretty much anyone outside of Detroit (well, anyone who doesn’t read Thrash Hits, at any rate).

Video: Lose Weight, Get In Shape – it’s The Dillinger Escape Plan Jogging Method

January 2nd, 2013

Run Dillinger Thrash Hits

It’s the New Year. We’ve all overdone it over Christmas. We don’t want reminding of the entire day we spent lounging on the sofa in our pants, eating nothing but Ferrero Roche and drinking every leftover can of lager we found in the fridge. What we need is an exercise regime to go hand-in-hand with those New Year’s resolutions we’re inevitably jettisoning in the next two weeks. What we need is a way to combine it with this ludicrous love of heavy music that we’ve got going on.

What we need is Dillinger Run – aka The Dillinger Escape Plan Jogging Method.

Top 6: Reasons we’re not (too) sad that Jeff Tuttle has left The Dillinger Escape Plan

August 18th, 2012

Jeff Tuttle from The Dillinger Escape Plan by Ben Gibson Thrash Hits

Okay. That blog title is a massive piece of misdirection. When the news came in yesterday that Jeff Tuttle had decided to part ways with The Dillinger Escape Plan, we were really bummed out. We frickin’ love DEP, and we frickin’ love what Tuttle brought to the band. Although he didn’t appear on Ire Works, Tuttle had been in the band since they started touring that release, and his contributions to 2010’s Option Paralysis – which was Thrash Hits’ Album of 2010 – can’t be understated either.

However, rather than despair that a member of our favourite bands has decided to leave, we’re giving this one a positive spin. Which is why we’ve gone and put together….

Six we’re not (too) sad that Jeff Tuttle has left The Dillinger Escape Plan:

Help The Armed to keep recording and therefore continue to be awesome

March 22nd, 2012

The Armed 2 2011 promo photo Thrash Hits

If you’ve been reading Thrash Hits for any length of time now, you’ll know we’ve got a lot of time for The Armed. In case you’re new to these parts, The Armed are DIY-as-fuck, Detroit-based, DEP-associated badasses, who put out all of their releases for free download. Well, DIY is all good, and giving away ALL your music for free is even better, but it doesn’t exactly pay the bills when it comes to recording new material. Which is why The Armed need your help.

Live: Mastodon, The Dillinger Escape Plan + Red Fang @ London Brixton Academy – 11 February 2012

February 16th, 2012

Mastodon 2011 promo photo Thrash Hits

Yeah, it’s that tour. The one the US had last year and we were all really jealous about. Oh well. We got it too. Mastodon and The Dillinger Escape Plan released the Thrash Hits Album of the Year of 2011 and 2010 respectively. Red Fang released an album last year but it went largely unnoticed. Shit happens. The good news is that we went to Brixton (and Manchester) to see this tour. Is that good news? It is. It definitely is.

Six things we learnt when we saw Mastodon/TDEP/Red Fang at Brixton

The Dillinger Escape Plan are coming back to London in April – and maybe a whole UK tour to boot

February 13th, 2012

The Dillinger Escape Plan 2011 promo photo Thrash Hits

They might’ve only just finished touring the UK in support of Mastodon, but it seems The Dillinger Escape Plan already look set to be making a return to our shores sooner rather than later. We’ve just spied this date – 26 April 2012 – as a scheduled Dillinger Escape Plan show over on The Highbury Garage’s website, even though there’s not been an official announcement anywhere else yet.

Tickets go on sale on 15 February, i.e., on Wednesday. You better believe we’re going to be at the head of queue. We’ll have more dates and details for you when we get ’em. Although thinking about other bands’ album release schedules, it’d make sense (and be a frickin’ KILLER line-up) if this turned out to be a dual-headliner jaunt with either Cancer Bats or Every Time I Die as opposed to just a Groezrock warm-up show….

Mastodon Brent Hinds by Gary Wolstenholme Thrash Hits

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – as far as touring line-ups go, the combination of Mastodon, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Red Fang has set the bar for 2012. Given that Mastodon put out the Thrash Hits Album of 2011, The Dillinger Escape Plan put out the Thrash Hits album of 2010, and Red Fang are one of our favourite up’n’coming crushers, it’s gonna take one heck of a tour to top this.

Retrospective Review: The Devin Townsend Project – Deconstruction

December 11th, 2011

When we asked our contributors to tell us their albums of the year, we also offered them the opportunity to retrospectively review any of their Top 10 list that we hadn’t reviewed already. Ruth Booth took us up on that offer.

The Devin Townsend Project
Addicted

If Addicted wasn’t heavy enough, then bloody hell, you can’t say you haven’t got what you’ve asked or here. Depth of sound has always been a trademark of Townsend’s work, but even by those standards, Deconstruction is a tremendously dense record, one that’s way too heavy to be just metal; stuffed with (deep breath) opera, death metal, lullabies, space olympics raves, Al Jolson on ice; Meshuggah, Melechesh and Stephen Sondheim; metal luminaries in double figures, the Prague Philharmonic and PA’DAM choir; sex, death, religion, evolution, giant fast food, aliens… I’m not sure about the kitchen sink, but I’m pretty sure I heard a cat on there at one point.

Live & Photos: Devin Townsend plays ‘Deconstruction’ @ London ULU – 12 November 2011

Devin Townsend plays Deconstruction Thrash Hits

It’s night no.3 of Devin Townsend’s four night London residency under the An Evening with The Devin Townsend Project banner, and tonight was the night things really got weird. When you’re talking about Devin Townsend, that’s some claim. With Deconstruction by far the most guest-musician stuffed record from Townsend’s 4-album series, just how was he going to reproduce it all live? Ruth Booth was on hand to find out.
