dimmu borgir

Live: Dimmu Borgir @ Kentish Town Forum – Tuesday, 21 September 2010

September 23rd, 2010

When Norwegian bands are in town, chances are you’ll find Tom Dare slinking around for a good vantage point. When it’s Dimmu Borgir in the capital, you’ll struggle to keep him away. This time though, he wishes he had.

When Dimmu Borgir announced they were playing a London date, the initial reaction was “fuck yes!”. When the venue was announced as The Forum, the initial reaction was “oh fuck”. Anyone familiar with the venue will know of its… ‘interesting’ acoustics, and how a band with the grand symphonics like Dimmu could be particularly hampered. Yet this could not hint at the myriad of dire problems that would afflict a genuinely shocking headline performance.

Interview: Dimmu Borgir – “They might spit on us, but we don’t care!”

September 2nd, 2010

When Norwegian black metallers Dimmu Borgir came to town, we sent Tom Dare off to chat to guitarist Galder about new album, Abrahadabra

After three years and the departure of two band members (keyboard player Mustis, and bassist & clean vocalist ICS Vortex), Dimmu Borgir are about to release new album Abrahadabra. At a top-secret location in London (i.e., a Travelodge), we got to listen to this vast and ambitious slab of evil. After recovering, we sat down with Galder, guitarist with arguably the biggest Norwegian black metal band going, to discuss the band’s new record, Aleister Crowley, touring with Korn and potentially being spat on.

The overuse of symphonic keyboards is something of a bugbear amongst those of us who delve into the world of the filthy and wretched. While some bands use them to ornament and texture their work, others either end up smothering their guitar parts with them, or as a smokescreen to obscure a scarcity of ideas. Abigail Williams have previously been accused of the latter, but can be no longer. It’s much worse than that.

New Dimmu Borgir album artwork and name revealed. Rumours of guest appearances by Paul Daniels and David Copperfield unconfirmed.

July 10th, 2010

With the revelation of the album title and artwork for the forthcoming opus from Dimmu Borgir, Tom Dare raises an eyebrow

There are moments in history you wish you could have stepped in and said “erm, would you like to think this through?” I’d quite like to pop back to my own self, aged 16, and say “big baggy shorts? Spiky hair? Are you sure that’s really you, mate?”. But I’d have donated organs to have been there to step in to the meeting where Dimmu Borgir entitled their new album Abrahadabra.

The term “supergroup” has almost become one to avoid. While the occasional project assembled from other highly successful bands has deserved the prefix “super-” – Down and Shrinebuilder being two wildly different examples – many simply plug straight into the lowest common denominator and release depressingly average material. When members of Dimmu Borgir, Napalm Death and others join together to record a death metal record, you hope the result will be impressive, but fear the worst. Thankfully, Insidious Disease’s debut Shadowcast alleviates those fears and does impress. And then tries to scare the shit out of you.

Can we finally put the soap opera of the Gorgoroth name dispute behind us now? As interesting and legally important as the issue was, it is surely time to get back to the business at hand- making disturbing and evil black metal and generally upsetting people.

Folk metal: how divisive it has been. There are those would rather listen to the first Bring Me The Horizon record played backwards on out-of-tune guitars, than put on anything recorded by the violin-carrying brigade. Well, to all of those who fall into the former category, may I say the following:

Would you kindly crawl out from your own arse, have a listen to Finntroll’s latest album, Nifelvind, and learn to have some fun? As fun is what Finntroll are all about.

There’s a lot we could say about the Defenders of the Faith show in Brixton. We could mention Five Finger Death Punch’s use of nu-metal poses to start a mosh pit before 7pm. Or how Unearth rattle through more chest-thumping riffs in a 30 minute set than some bands do in their entire careers. Or maybe how Dimmu Borgir should really start crediting their smoke machine as the seventh member of the band. But really, Sunday night in Brixton was all about one band – Lamb of God.
