The future of British rock and metal festivals

April 1st, 2014

With Black Sabbath, Soundgarden, Faith No More, Motörhead and Soulfly (and Wolfmother…) set to fill the main stage of a day at British Summer Time festival in Hyde Park this July, it struck Raziq Rauf that the same bill could easily have been announced in 2000 to the same fanfare. What has (or has not) happened in the last 14 years for this to be the case and what does the future have in store?

What is the future of music festivals? I’m not talking 2015 (because 2014’s summer season lineup is just about fully lined up), I’m talking about something more like 2025. What is going to happen to our music festivals in the next ten years? Will Metallica still be headlining on a rota with Slipknot, Iron Maiden and Linkin Park? The classic rockers like Aerosmith, Def Leppard and Black Sabbath have a shelf-life. Are Avenged Sevenfold or Rammstein the answer? While they sell out arenas in London and that simply translates to headlining Donington or Knebworth, neither have ever had quite the same impact as those first mentioned few and they likely never will.

Tits @ Download Festival 2013

June 20th, 2013

We are now firmly in the aftermath of last weekend’s Download Festival and while heads and limbs may now finally be recovering, the memories will surely last a lifetime. Donington Park yet again proved itself to be the home of rock and astonishing sets from the likes of Slipknot, Iron Maiden, Rammstein and many, many others made it a vintage year.

However, something slightly less cool once again raised its head in that field last weekend and it’s about time it gets addressed.

June 11th, 2013

It’s fair to say James Monteith has been a bit busy releasing TesseracT‘s excellent second album, Altered State. That’s why this is his first post in eight months, but he’s already taken up a new challenge – cycling to Donington. From London. Hopefully without vomiting. Yeah, right…

Progtology with James Monteith Thrash Hits

Just over two months ago I was minding my own business, scratching my balls, watching the clock count down to 27 May (Altered State release date), when Prog editor, Jerry Ewing emailed me about The Heavy Metal Truants bike ride. At first I thought it was a joke – especially coming from Jerry, who doesn’t look like he’s ever sat on a bike, let alone up for a 161-mile bike ride – but after a few days of harassment I realized it was for real, and after reading about the event and the charities it supports, I was very intrigued and decided I had to get involved.
