DVD: Devin Townsend Project – By A Thread – Live In London 2011

July 2nd, 2012

Devin Townsend plays Addicted Thrash Hits

In November 2011, Devin Townsend (and friends) came to London to treat fans of the Devin Townsend Project’s four album concept to the whole shebang. That meant four shows across four nights, featuring august djent, seething progressive metal whales, gothic cheerleaders, soft shuffle blues, presidential campaigns, glorious power metal, and pretty much everything in between. And they filmed it. We asked Ruth Booth to check out whether By A Thread is as good to watch back as she remembers it being at the time.

Retrospective Review: The Devin Townsend Project – Ghost

December 20th, 2011

When we asked our contributors to tell us their albums of the year, we also offered them the opportunity to retrospectively review any of their Top 10 list that we hadn’t reviewed already. Ruth Booth took us up on that offer.

With those weightless woodwind notes, we come to the final (planned) part of the four-year, self-titled epic: Ghost, the ambient calm to Deconstruction’s storm of chaotic metal. Though Deconstruction is the more abrasive and complex of the two, Ghost has potential to be the ‘difficult’ record here – and not just if you’re still pining for Strapping Young Lad. Townsend has attempted ambient and folk sounds before, though they’ve largely been complimentary or quirky flavours on more eclectic albums. Meanwhile, his only fully ambient records, The Hummer and Devlab, were self-conscious, rather willful experiments in THC sound, and remain cult choices even amongst devoted Dev fans.

Retrospective Review: The Devin Townsend Project – Deconstruction

If Addicted wasn’t heavy enough, then bloody hell, you can’t say you haven’t got what you’ve asked or here. Depth of sound has always been a trademark of Townsend’s work, but even by those standards, Deconstruction is a tremendously dense record, one that’s way too heavy to be just metal; stuffed with (deep breath) opera, death metal, lullabies, space olympics raves, Al Jolson on ice; Meshuggah, Melechesh and Stephen Sondheim; metal luminaries in double figures, the Prague Philharmonic and PA’DAM choir; sex, death, religion, evolution, giant fast food, aliens… I’m not sure about the kitchen sink, but I’m pretty sure I heard a cat on there at one point.

And so, to the end – Devin Townsend’s four-night London residency under the banner of An Evening with The Devin Townsend Project comes to a close not with a bang or a whimper, but with an evening of experimentation and introspection. Tonight, Devin Townsend turned his attention to GhostRuth Booth and Jamie Croft were there to document it.

Devin Townsend plays Deconstruction Thrash Hits

It’s night no.3 of Devin Townsend’s four night London residency under the An Evening with The Devin Townsend Project banner, and tonight was the night things really got weird. When you’re talking about Devin Townsend, that’s some claim. With Deconstruction by far the most guest-musician stuffed record from Townsend’s 4-album series, just how was he going to reproduce it all live? Ruth Booth was on hand to find out.

It’s night no.2 of Ruth Booth’s mammoth review of Devin Townsend’s four-night London residency, and tonight the Canadian has brought Anneke van Giersbergen along to help him out. Not only that, but it’s the night where damn near ever song has an exclamation! mark! after! it! Yep, you guessed it – the album getting aired tonight is Addicted.

Devin Townsend plays Ki Thrash Hits

And so we come to the end – An Evening With The Devin Townsend Project is four nights to mark the end of a four year, four album journey for the Canadian musician: one that’s taken us from Meshuggah to Enya, via Elvis – from the histrionics of choir-backed space metal to mellow blacklit acoustics. If Devin Townsend was going to play all four of the albums released under The Devin Townsend Project banner on subsequent nights, we had little choice but to send Ruth Booth along to witness the whole shebang. It all kicked off with 2009’s Ki.
