Music lives and dies by its ability to affect the listener, yet few metal bands are capable of making a record that moistens the eyes and puts a lump in the throat of even the most sentimental listener, let alone the most hardened of metal fans. But when not only does this, but does it through the medium of savage, bleak black metal while still evoking all the emotions metal’s most evil style is known for, this becomes a staggering achievement. Winterfylleth have done just this.

Album: Dyscarnate – Enduring The Massacre

Dyscarnate are a death metal band. Saying that feels slightly strange – every other new band who incorporate “death metal” into their genre name seem to want it prefixed by “brutal symphonic progressive technical ambient blackened”, and definitely don’t want you to call them “deathcore” no matter how many hardcore breakdowns they have. It’s something of a relief to find something as straight-up death metal as this. It’s also part of the reason their debut record Enduring The Massacre is so good, and why this is a band to be genuinely excited about.

Future Hits 036: Shapes

June 10th, 2009

Coming from legendary indie label Big Scary Monsters’ stable stable, Shapes have already had a busy spring and are about to have a busy summer too. We fitted them in for the Future Hits treatment…

From: Birmingham, UK
Sounds like: Fugazi, Mogwai, clever post-hardcore

Thrash Hits verdict: If you like your music jaunty, angular (jangular?) and “mathy”, then Shapes could well be the band for you. Don’t ask them to tell you a joke though. You’ll be disappointed.

So it appears that our initial thoughts were correct and Sonisphere will hit seven countries – Holland, Germany, Spain, Catalunya, (that’s in Spain, isn’t it?) Sweden, Finland and, of course, England. It looks pretty ace!

FYI, the 60,000 capacity festival hits Knebworth, Hertfordshire on 01 & 02 August 2009 and is headlined by Metallica (Sunday) and Linkin Park (Saturday) with Mastodon, Lamb Of God in tow, as if we hadn’t told you that already.
