Live: Enslaved @ London Camden Underworld – 22 April 2011

April 28th, 2011

Having recently won their fourth consecutive Spellemannprisen for last year’s astounding Axioma Ethica Odini, Enslaved have firmly cemented their place at the very top of Norway’s musical exports alongside the likes of Dimmu Borgir, Satyricon and Immortal. We thought we’d head down to the Underworld to celebrate the Bank Holiday weekend in true (tr00/trve) Viking style.

It is something of a tragedy that the guitarist in one of the most legendary of all black metal behemoths was forced to stop playing through medical necessity. While still an integral part of Immortal’s frozen gestalt, Demonaz hasn’t played guitar since 1997. It was inevitable that March Of The Norse, the first record from his new eponymous act, was going to be a matter of some interest.

Live: Dimmu Borgir @ Kentish Town Forum – Tuesday, 21 September 2010

September 23rd, 2010

When Norwegian bands are in town, chances are you’ll find Tom Dare slinking around for a good vantage point. When it’s Dimmu Borgir in the capital, you’ll struggle to keep him away. This time though, he wishes he had.

When Dimmu Borgir announced they were playing a London date, the initial reaction was “fuck yes!”. When the venue was announced as The Forum, the initial reaction was “oh fuck”. Anyone familiar with the venue will know of its… ‘interesting’ acoustics, and how a band with the grand symphonics like Dimmu could be particularly hampered. Yet this could not hint at the myriad of dire problems that would afflict a genuinely shocking headline performance.

Interview: Enslaved – Grutle Kjellson & Ivar Bjørnson on Axioma Ethica Odini

September 22nd, 2010

We don’t expect you to know what Axioma Ethica Odini means other than the title of Enslaved‘s new album so we sent Amit Sharma to meet their lead singer and guitarist to discuss everything about their 11th studio album.

The new album is called Axioma Ethica Odini. Can tell us more about the concept behind the title, music and artwork?

Grutle: Well there were actually two titles – it was supposed to be called Axioma with the end of title as Ethica Odini.

Music lives and dies by its ability to affect the listener, yet few metal bands are capable of making a record that moistens the eyes and puts a lump in the throat of even the most sentimental listener, let alone the most hardened of metal fans. But when not only does this, but does it through the medium of savage, bleak black metal while still evoking all the emotions metal’s most evil style is known for, this becomes a staggering achievement. Winterfylleth have done just this.

2008 into 2009: Omnium Gatherum

December 13th, 2008

Markus Vanhala from the self-proclaimed, “Finnish melodic death kings of metal”, Omnium Gatherum, is giving us some jibberjabber. We bloody love Finnish people. Perkele! Yksi olut! Kiitos! Other Finnish words!

What was your highlight of 2008?
There were lots of highlights in our career in 2008 as Omnium Gatherum released our best work to date, the fourth album, The Redshift, which I’m still proud of and after already many months so that’s somethin’ new, haha. The album went Top 30 in Finland which was cool indeed and we also did great tours with Dark Tranquillity in UK and with Nile and Grave in Europe and a lots of good Finnish headlining gigs. Happy days, memorial nights and hangöveric [We don’t know why there’s an umlaut there either – Ed] mornings!
