Over the course of five albums, Insomnium has emerged as one of the best things to happen to Melodic Death Metal post-1995. When it comes to bittersweet melody and sprawling build-ups to emotional, cathartic denouements, they have very few competitors. That’s probably why new album Shadows Of The Dying Sun is the one thing you should buy this week and with this sixth release, the Finns have decided to tinker with their sound.

Those Finnish widdlers of all things guitar, Children of Bodom, have a new studio album coming out next month. It’s their eighth LP. Eighth! It’s called Halo Of Blood, and they’re pretty damn pleased with it. So much so that they sent us a video of frontman/guitarist Alexi Laiho and bassist/backing vocalist Henkka Seppälä telling us what their favourite individual tracks from the album are.

GREATEST HITS OF 2012 no.8: Tom Dare mouths off about Nightwish spliting with Anette Olzon

December 27th, 2012

Nightwish promo photo 2011 Anette Olzon Thrash Hits

One thing we’ve tried to do in 2012 is post a few more long-form articles, stripping away the webhit-harvesting buzzword nonsense from heavy metal’s burning issues, and concentrating on the the bigger picture that other sites are missing in amongst the hullabaloo. One such article was Tom Dare’s analysis of why Nightwish parting ways with Anette Olzon – the band’s lead vocalist since 2007 – wasn’t perhaps necessarily as big of a deal as some fans thought.

GREATEST HITS OF 2012 no.7: Finland being officially the most metal country in the world

Map Global Metal Reddit Thrash Hits 2012

Facts. Stats. Graphs. Maps. DATA. These are the all the kind of thing we love but don’t actually talk about on Thrash Hits because a) we’re a metal blog, and b) we’re the only ones nerdy enough to care about stats, facts, maps and graphs around here.

Unless of course said facts, stats and data have been used to make a map that charts precisely how metal a country is per 100,000 people, depending on how many metal bands it has. Yep.

Is Wintersun’s new album the most important metal release of 2012?

November 26th, 2012

Thrash Hits’ resident Euro metal geek Tom Dare is having great fun with the long, long, long-awaited second album from Finnish widdlers Wintersun. But he thinks it’s much more than that – he thinks it’s a landmark.

When Wintersun announced back in 2006 that work  composing album number two was underway, hopes were high. But as the years rolled by, Time seemingly joined the likes of Chinese Democracy and the mythical third Necrophagist record in the “when hell freezes over”-stakes when it came to a realistic ETA, fears increased. “Were they polishing a turd?”, we wondered. Had they been far too ambitious for their own good? So what a shock it was when Time I finally arrived, not just seriously good, but as one of the most important metal releases of its generation. POLL: Finland is exporting a TV show where rock stars invade your house, do some DIY, and fix your miserable lives. Which rock star do you want it to be?

October 15th, 2012

Mr Lordi DIY Thrash Hits

Okay, so last week we gave you some advice about how to spruce up your shabby home – but what if you live in an absolute pit of squalor? What if your wretched hovel is so far gone that even the artwork of Valient Himself won’t sort it out? Well, if a Finnish TV production company gets their way, you might be lucky enough to get a local rock star to come round, smash your place up, then help rebuild it in an altogether snazzier and sharper style.

Why Nightwish spliting with Anette Olzon is a bigger deal than you think

October 2nd, 2012

Thrash Hits’ Tom Dare loves Nightwish. He’s barely put his memories of the Tarja Turunen era behind him and they’ve gone and shed Anette Olzon. Here’s what he made of it after he stopped crying.

Nightwish have parted ways with singer Anette Olzon. While parts of the the UK is sniggering in adolescent fashion at the very mention of these Finns, and large swathes America is looking over the water, scratching it’s head and asking “Who?”, in Europe, this is bloody huge news.

Viking Metal and Christianity: A Most Misunderstood Relationship

March 8th, 2012

Amon Amarth Viking Metal Thrash Hits

David Keevill studied Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic at Cambridge. That means he knows his stuff when it comes to actual, really-real Vikings. Since both we and he are pedantic sorts, we browbeat him into writing an explanation as to on why anti-Christian imagery in Viking Metal is a horrible anachronism. Yeah, serious intellectual stuff! Bet you weren’t expecting that on Thrash Hits, right?
