For all the talk that gets bandied around, you’d be forgiven for thinking that every band needs to be on some ceaseless quest for progress. It simply isn’t true; not everyone wants to ‘push the boundaries of what’s possible in music’, or whatever other guff gets spouted around this conceit. Autopsy did their innovating as one of the very earliest bands at the birth of the death metal scene, and their particular brand of gore-flecked nastiness has proven hugely influential for the best part of thirty years. Why fix what’s already broken in the best possible way?

Ten years in and five albums deep, Evergreen Terrace have continued their blistering combination of melodic hardcore and metal on their latest album, Almost Home. After a disappointing show on Wolfbiker, their last studio effort, which seriously lacked the more melodic aspects of their sound, Evergreen Terrace have gone all out to wipe the slate clean.

“It’s not easy making a name for yourself.” So states the opening line of ‘The Downfall Of Us All’, the first song on A Day To Remember’s second album. Of course, it helps a little if you record a rocked-up version of a massively popular song (in their case, Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Since U Been Gone’) and inject it into general public’s consciousness.

2008 into 2009: Order of Ennead

December 21st, 2008

Floridian extreme metallers Order Of Ennead might be a side project but with an album in the can, they’re already making waves. We spoke to bassist, Scott Patrick (Resurrection) and guitarist, Kevin Quirion (Council Of The Fallen).

What was your highlight of 2008?
S: Getting Order Of Ennead up and running.
K: It was a great year. We signed to Earache in May, recorded our debut at Audio Hammer in June. We got to share the stage with Deicide, Hate Eternal, Municipal Waste and Adrift. And our second album is already in the demoing stages, so we were very productive this year.

What is your funniest tour story of 2008?
K: Scott, while in Italy, was so smashed. He just laid his backpack down and then immediately started asking where it was. Later he passed out and Glen Benton started taking pics of him. The guy looked like a corpse he was so out of it. Jack Owen is hilarious as well.

Goth Cruise (The Movie) hits The Sunshine State

July 30th, 2008

goth cruise thrash hits

When 150 Goths take an unlikely cruise with 2500 regular cruise afficionados, someone has to film it. This is how Goth Cruise came to be.

Goth Cruise is a feature film studying the enduring allure of Goth culture in the UK and USA. Filmed on board a 5-day cruise from New Jersey to Bermuda and back in October 2007 it looks bloody great.

English director Jeanie Finlay began the project by asking some key questions about Goth culture such as, “How do grown up Goths earn a living, raise families and have fun?” Intriguing, but not as intriguing as, “Just what the hell happens on a Goth Cruise?”

She came out of filming the ‘Gothumentary’ having learnt a few things like “Goths love karaoke and hot tubs and cocktails”, “every woman should make room in their wardrobe for at least one corset” and “little old ladies from Jersey love Satan”. That’s what happens on a Goth Cruise.

Watch the trailer for Goth Cruise (The Movie)

There are no plans for a UK release as of yet but there will be a special sneak preview screening at The Cuban Club Theater in Ybor City, Florida on 8 August 2008 at 8pm.

Torche have reached that level of critical acclaim now where they have been labeled to high heaven. The Floridian quartet have been labeled as everything from ‘stoner pop’ to ‘thunder rock’ to ‘doom pop’, according to Wikipedia. The truth of the matter is that they are all perfectly reasonable descriptors. [Read more →]
