If it’s somehow passed you by, Sound City Players is the latest super-super-group led by Dave Grohl. Centred around the legendary Sound City Studio, the band brings together loads of the artists featured in the wonderful feature-length documentary written and directed by Grohl. That they are all playing live with a record for sale as well makes it a 360-degree experience. We saw the film, got the album and went to the gig. Here’s a review of the last bit.

Thrash Hits Podcast 1

With Reading and Leeds Festivals over and done with, the UK summer festival season is officially over. Well, it’s over as far as we’re concerned. This week, Raz and Hugh look back on their highlughts and lowlights from Reading and Leeds respectively, as well as taking a look at this week’s top news stories: the new album announcement from Deftones, and Sylosis bunking off from a European tour with Devin Townsend and Fear Factory to go gallivanting around the USA supporting Lamb of God.

It’s nice having a genuine fist-pumping, bridge and tunnel New Jersey boy in our ranks. That Dan Pelic is one of our writers means that we can review things like The Bamboozle Festival with ease. Foo Fighters, Bon Jovi and… Skrillex headline the three-day event and it’s on A BEACH. Cool.

WARNING: Dan’s in a bad mood.

It’s International Jawbreaker Appreciation Day. This is why you should give a damn.

May 4th, 2012

Today marks International Jawbreaker Appreciation Day – a perfect excuse to celebrate the rise and fall of a band that once wrote a song called ‘Sluttering (May 4th)’. We got Alex Andrews on the case.

“There was a sun once. It lit the whole damn sky…”

It’s difficult to pay tribute to a band that is responsible for so much of what you dislike about music. You could argue that a band has little control over its legacy, but given that the Get Up Kids have since apologised for spawning a generation of whiney sound-alikes peering out from behind straightened fringes, it’s perhaps only fair that Jawbreaker take their share of the blame.

Festival Republic have tonight officially confirmed the first batch of 41 names playing their flagship festivals – Reading & Leeds Festivals. Although their arguably the UK’s biggest festivals taking place in 2012 (since Glastonbury is taking a year off), admittedly most of these names will be of little or no interest to the majority of our readers here at Thrash Hits, but there are a few heavier highlights in among the indie-fodder.

Retrospective Review: Foo Fighters – Wasting Light

January 1st, 2012

When we asked our contributors to tell us their albums of the year, we also offered them the opportunity to retrospectively review any of their Top 10 list that we hadn’t reviewed already. Jon Kerr took us up on that offer.

Twenty years after Nevermind, Butch Vig finally produces a Foo Fighters album. In Dave Grohl’s garage. On tape. And Krist Novoselic plays bass on it. Whether you think the “Nevermind-effect” on the rock industry was a good or bad thing is one of the divisive questions for rock fans of a certain age, making this collaboration one that was destined to raise both ears and eyebrows.

Paul Brannigan has been writing about rock music for a while now. He was editor of Kerrang! in its most successful period. He released a collection of Lemmy’s great platitudes in 2009. Now he’s written Dave Grohl’s biography. We talked to him about it because it’s going to be the biggest music book of the last few years and Paul’s a dude.
