De Profundis
Frequencies
Self-Release
19 June 2014

by Pete Long

With a new full player due out later this year, London-based De Profundis want your attention. The four song EP Frequencies is their means of grabbing it and to ensure it works, they’re releasing it for free. Considering the quality of their 2012 outing The Emptiness Within, with its Death-meets-Opeth take on Death Metal, that’s a generous offer.

If You Buy One Thing This Week: EP2 by Yards

June 2nd, 2014

Yards promo photo Thrash Hits

We first wrote about Yards almost a year ago and we wrote that about six months after we realised they were well good. Yes, you might think that we like to keep things from you but we actually really like telling you about our favourite new sounds. With two members from two of our favourite bands (The Ghost of a Thousand and Astrohenge), it is not surprising that we like Yards. The good news is that the Brighton/London hardcore quartet have released their second EP and it’s called EP2.

Deftones 2011 promo photo Thrash Hits

One of our favourite bands of all time, Deftones, have released the first taster of their forthcoming seventh studio album, Koi No Yokan, and they’re giving it away for free. If you head on over to their official website, you can download ‘Leathers’ with absolutely no strings attached – they’re not even forcing you to join their mailing list, or Like them on Facebook, or any of the usual tricks bands play when they dangle freebies in front of their fans.

Help The Armed to keep recording and therefore continue to be awesome

March 22nd, 2012

The Armed 2 2011 promo photo Thrash Hits

If you’ve been reading Thrash Hits for any length of time now, you’ll know we’ve got a lot of time for The Armed. In case you’re new to these parts, The Armed are DIY-as-fuck, Detroit-based, DEP-associated badasses, who put out all of their releases for free download. Well, DIY is all good, and giving away ALL your music for free is even better, but it doesn’t exactly pay the bills when it comes to recording new material. Which is why The Armed need your help.

Throats want you to download their entire discography for FREE, and will help you do it too.

Throats 2010 promo photo Thrash Hits

Throats were one of those bands that burned hard and burned fast. In the three of so years of the band’s lifespan, everyone kinda took them for granted. The band had shrugged off the “hipster grind” tag that their less-imaginative critics loved to throw at them, and had started to become a real force all of their own, when in and then in December 2010 they announced in December 2010 that they were splitting up. Which sucked.

EP: AGHAST! – Live Dangerously

AGHAST!
Live Dangerously
Self-Released
01 March 2012

by Andy Parker

I first got to witness London-based death/thrash/extreme metal crew AGHAST! in a dodgy Brighton pub on my birthday in 2009 and was stunned by two things. Firstly, by lead guitarist Christiaan Verheij Van-Wijk’s mental spandex trousers, which were then replaced by an even crazier pair when the band went on stage. And secondly, by how blisteringly-fast and gripping their blinding riffs were.

Future Hits 107: I Am Heresy

January 11th, 2012

i am heresy boysetsfire chambers promo photo 2012 thrash hits

I Am Heresy

From: Delaware/Maryland/New Jersey, United States
Lazy equation: Angry dads + Their angry kids = Tech Metal + Hardcore
URL: Facebook

Thrash Hits Verdict:Boysetsfire teases us with a reunion tour, even playing at Reading Festival 2011 and retreat back to the ether. The Casting Out calls it a day shortly after signing to Eyeball Records, Chambers unleash but one album, discharge their vocalist, and fizzle out. What does this mean? It means a bunch of dudes with jack shit to do.

Thankfully, this group of men (and boys) managed to reach out and touch one another to bring us a head-on collision of Boysetsfire and Chambers. It’s heavy metal enjoined with the youthful vigor of Nathan Gray’s own 17-year-old son, Simon, and BSF band mate, Josh Latshaw’s son, Jonah.

So far, we’ve been offered two tracks (download them below) ahead of an upcoming album on Magic Bullet Records. The music is certainly rooted in traditional metal and hardcore, but the twisted wreckage of bands gone past gives us a fusion worthy of original praise. We speak to Nathan Gray about his new project…

Future Hits 070: Something About Death Or Dying

December 8th, 2010

Something About Death Or Dying promo photo Thrash Hits

Something About Death Or Dying
From: New Jersey, USA
Lazy equation: (Norma Jean x Doomriders) – The Gaslight Anthem
Website: Myspace, Facebook

Thrash Hits verdict: We live for fresh music and this is it right here. We love, love, loved Chambers’ debut album earlier in 2010 and The Gaslight Anthem speak for themselves so a combination of the two was never going to be bad but we really weren’t preparaed for just how good SADOD were going to be. Groovy, tumultuous riffs that rise and fall with speedball energy, rounded off with vocals that carry an unbridled ferocity. Alex Rosamilia’s guitarwork is unrecognisable from his other band and Dan Pelic’s voice is one of the truest portrayals of anger you’re ever going to hear. It’s inspirational stuff.
