A few weeks ago, I got an invite to go to David Draiman’s house in Texas. He was going to provide food from the best barbecue joint in Austin. The catch? I had to listen to the new album from his new project, Device. Mmmm, barbecue. How bad could it be, right? Mmmm, barbecue.

‘Mad’ David Draiman. He’s the singer from Disturbed. He made that weird monkey noise in rock club floor-filler, ‘Stupify’. He’s the guy with those massive lip piercings. He tweets in 100 PER CENT CAPITAL LETTERS on Twitter. He’s right up there with Fred Durst and Coby Dick as a premier larger-than-life nu metal personality – ostensibly macho and totally metal. There’s a lot to make fun of and cynical old me? I’m sceptical about this whole shebang.

It’ s only been a year since Black Country Communion stormed onto the scene with one of the best records of 2010, and they are already back with their next offering of bona fide blues rock. From the moment you hear the opening crescendo of ‘The Outsider’ it’s obvious this band are oozing confidence at this stage of their career, with no hesitation in producing that often very difficult second album.

Heaven and Hell @ High Voltage Festival – Victoria Park, London, 24 July 2010

It’s the first day of High Voltage Festival 2010, and it must be said that for a first time festival, everything seems to be running rather smoothly. The punters are in – tattooed leather-lovers in front of the Hammer Stage, wizard-like hippies smoking their pipes by the Prog Stage, and the Dad Rockers at the Classic Rock Main Stage, trying to work out if the geezer in front of them once played in Quo. Victoria Park is brimming with excitement, and it only takes a quick glance at the line-up to realise why.
